Cricketer Yuvraj Singh is considered by many to be one of the greatest white-ball talents of his generation. Apart from his stellar career and the health struggles he faced during it, Yuvraj has always been an open book about his personal life as well. His tumultuous relationship with his father, Yograj Singh, has always been a point of discussion, and during an old interview from his playing days, Yuvraj recalled how tough it was growing up under the tutelage of his father and how he pushed his parents to get separated.

While talking with veteran TV talk show host Simi Garewal in an earlier interview, Yuvraj was asked about his father’s hopes of playing for India and how that dream was then passed down to him. He said, “What I heard was that he worked very hard for his game, and he was very talented. He was just very aggressive, and he did things his own way, so it was tough on him. He wanted to see himself through me, and he wanted me to play for India.”

He recalled his father’s tough training style and said, “My dad’s friends and people around the colony called him Hitler. I remember that we had a beautiful garden, and my mother had put in a lot of plants. He removed everything and installed cricket nets. I used to get so tired from the previous day’s practice that I would refuse to wake up the next day. He used to fill up a bucket of cold water and put it in my quilt. I used to hate my dad at those times.” He added that many thought his father would kill him with the regorous training.

But Yuvraj admitted that whatever he went through made him into the player he became and said, “I think those sacrifices that I made, and the way he trained me, were the reason that I played for India at such a young age.”

Talking about sacrifices, he recalled his mother Shabnam Singh’s impact on his childhood and admitted that, “I think only a mother can make the sacrifices that my mom made to bring me up. I am very thankful for having a mother like that.”

Yuvraj also revealed that it was his idea that his parents get separated. He revealed that even as a teenager he realised that his parents would fare better separately, and he was honest with them about his thoughts.

He said, “Yeah, I was about 14 or 15 years old, and it was getting tough to be in that kind of an atmosphere where your parents are always fighting. It wasn’t good for me, and I was also playing at the time. I gave them the idea and told them that they should go their separate ways instead of causing such pain for the kids or the people around you.”

In an earlier interview with SMTV, Yograj Singh had accepted that he is estranged from his family. Yuvraj left with his mother when he was 17. Yograj married again and has two children with his second wife. Talking to SMTV, Yograj had said that he doesn’t get along with Yuvi and his family as the cricketer doesn’t want hs son Orion to face the same hardship that he did. “The day Yuvi hands his children over to me, they will meet the same fate as he did. You can only forge gold through fire. There will be no mercy, because there is only one path… That’s what they fear, and that’s why we aren’t together,” he had said.
