Actor Ranveer Singh’s film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani shows him as a gym-loving, abs-flaunting Delhi guy who is in love with a Bengali girl (played by Alia Bhatt). The actor had to shed his Bombay boy persona and had to work closely with Delhi-based content creator Yuvraj Dua to pick up the mannerism and accents of a West Delhi boy.
Yuvraj, has been creating content on social media for over three years and enjoys a strong following with his content revolving around youngsters and Delhi-related subjects. Sharing his experience of preparing Ranveer for the role of Rocky, Yuvraj tells indianexpress.com, that they invested almost 12 days just talking to each other casually and the actor picked up the basic nuances within that time frame.
“I had gone to Mumbai and 12 days before the movie started I and Ranveer sat together. I didn’t have to prepare him, we just talked. He would ask about my life story and I would ask about his. So, what happens is that his mind started grasping automatically that a certain word should be pronounced like this and another word should be like that. There is no dictionary that tells how to spell words in a certain accent that ladai ko kalesh bolna hai ya bhasad bolna hai,” Yuvraj says.
The 24-year-old influencer adds, “What he had done was that he made me very free and comfortable and made me feel that I really belong. This was just a free-flowing conversation, and we discussed the specifics of the film after that.”
Yuvraj also shared how the grueling work started when they started implementing the accent in the dialogues. The duo changed the dialogues as per ‘West Delhi style’.
“Ranveer and I both knew when dialogue was not giving that kind of a punch. Wherever he felt he would ‘ye bata kaise bolenge‘. So, we would work on it, modify it. There was also a lot of improvisation we did on the sets.”
The social media personality also shared that Ranveer too would share his ideas and said, “We did the accents and lingo which he got fantastically well, he grasped it so well. He had become a West Delhi boy. So if I couldn’t think of something, he would give inputs.”
Yuvraj, who is an avid cricket lover, came back with a very special memory. He shares, “So, we were at Ranveer’s house. Since I was in Mumbai for a few days, maybe over a week so I told him ki itna time ho gaya Delhi se aaye hue, cricket bat nahi touch kiya (It has been long since I played cricket).”
“He didn’t say anything to me, he called a guy, and whispered something in his ear. A few moments later the guy came back with a bat. Ranveer gave the bat to me and said let’s play some shots. It has been a long time since I did 83. Let’s play. So, he gave me the bat and then told me that Kapil paaji had personally gifted him that bat. I had goosebumps that I am holding a bat gifted by Kapil Dev, its grip is in my hands,” said an excited Yuvraj
Yuvraj has come back to Delhi now and is focusing on his content. Asked if he has plans to join Bollywood in the future, he says, “I had thought about it when I went to movie set. I realised that there is a big world outside of reels. It is such a large set, completely different. The work is creative but on a large scale. I had thought I will do something besides reel may be writing.”
He adds, “As such there is no plan but I am taking each day as it comes. Right now I have a content idea and I would rather focus on executing that instead of thinking what I will do five years down the line if I want to write or direct. So, taking each day as it comes”.
Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani also stars Alia Bhatt in the lead role. Directed by Karan Johar, the film brings veteran stars such as Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan and Shabana Azmi together on the big screen. The film is slated to release on 28 July.
