Actor-filmmaker Rakesh Roshan celebrates his 75th birthday on September 6. In his career as an actor, Rakesh starred in 84 films and was one of the most sought-after heroes of his time. He has starred in movies like Khubsoorat (1980) with Rekha and Kaamchor (1982) with Jaya Prada, among many other superhits. However, some of his most notable works include films he directed like Khoon Bhari Maang (1988), Karan Arjun (1995) and films like Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai , Koi Mil Gaya, Krrish, Krrish 2 and Krrish 3 starring Hrithik.
In an old interview, Rakesh had opened up about how Hrithik fulfilled his wishes by doing the kind of work he could not do in his career as an actor. In an interview with DNA, he had said, “He (Hrithik) has worked really hard. I failed as an actor. But like any parent, I wanted my son to live my dreams. Hrithik has done the things I could not do in my life. He’s a superstar; he is idolised by so many across the world. But he is my son and he makes me a proud father. He has had his ups and downs in his career and I feel it should always happen because that’s how he will learn from his mistakes.”
Rakesh Roshan, in the same interview, had also opened up about how Hrithik Roshan started assisting him right after college, letting go an opportunity to learn special effects abroad. The father-son duo’s first collaboration was Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan starrer Karan Arjun (1995).
Revealing that he was a strict father to Hrithik, the actor-filmmaker had said, “After graduating from college, he (Hrithik) was selected to learn special effects abroad. But he chose to be here and started working with me on Karan Arjun. As an assistant director, I was very strict with him. I made sure he would not sit with us for lunches, dinners. He would not travel in my car. Instead, he would travel with the other ADs in taxis, autos or buses.”
“We would be having breakfast on the same table at home, but on the set, he was not my son, but just another assistant. He would have to share a room with three other people and have food with them. That’s the way I thought he would learn much better,” Rakesh added.
After Karan Arjun, Hrithik Roshan assisted his father on films like Khel (1992) and Koyla (1997). Rakesh Roshan launched Hrithik in his directorial Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai (2000). The film also marked the Bollywood debut of Ameesha Patel. Rakesh is now set to direct the fourth instalment of the Krrish film franchise. The actor-filmmaker will also soon release a documentary titled The Roshans, which will shed light on Roshan, Rakesh Roshan, Rajesh Roshan and Hrithik’s career. Shah Rukh Khan had recently shot for the documentary, and it is expected to release early next year.
