Veteran actor Sanjeev Kumar aka Harihar Jethalal Jariwala was known for breaking the stereotypical image of a ‘hero’ in Bollywood in the 1970s and 1980s. With his common man image, he was one of the top most Bollywood actors. Actor Anju Mahendroo had earlier revealed an infamous incident involving Sanjeev and superstar Rajesh Khanna, who was in a relationship with the actor back then.

In an earlier interview with Filmfare, Anju shared that someone had spread rumours about her affair with Sanjeev, long after she broke up with Rajesh. However, this did not go down well with the superstar, who projected his jealousy during a film’s shot.

Anju said, “I was never attracted to Hari. For me, he was my mother’s brother. In fact, there was one actress who had told everyone that I was having an affair with Hari. My ex-boyfriend believed that I had a relationship with Hari and long after we had broken off he nursed the misconception. Years later, when Hari and he worked together in a film and he had to slap Hari in a scene, he gave a really hard one. Hari and he never got along.”

Anju and Rajesh’s relationship ended in 1972 and their break too, was highly publicized. Upon hearing the split, Sanjeev visited Anju to give moral support.

Anju said, “As soon as my ex-boyfriend and I split, Hari (Sanjeev’s real name) and Basuda (Bhattacharya, director) came home. I said, ‘Hello, this is no condolence meeting’, Hari was always there for me like a brother,” she said.”

Sanjeev Kumar has given several memorable films to Bollywood including Khilona, Dastak, Koshish, Aandhi, Seeta Aur Geeta and the iconic film Sholay. He passed away in 1985 after suffering a massive heart attack.
