Throughout a nearly five-decade cinematic career, yesteryear actor Farida Jalal has been a part of more than 200 films. Nonetheless, the actor cites one film, Aditya Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, for elevating her stature in the industry.
The longest-running movie in Hindi cinema, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, featured the actor as Kajol’s mother.
“Kya zarurat hai apna rang saaf karne ke. Aur saaf ho bhi gaya, toh tujhe kaha queen Elizabeth banna hai. Apne desh he toh wapas jaana hai na. Waha gehun jaisa rang bohot pasand karte hai, jaisa tera hai (There is no need for you to clear your skin. Even if it clears, you still have to go back to India. People there like wheatish skin tone).”
In an interview with Rediff.com, Farida had said that DDLJ gave her career a boost and after the film, she could quote any price. She said, “DDLJ gave my career a boost, and placed me on a pedestal. In a way, the film was a turning point in my career. I got a lot of films after DDLJ released, and I could quote any price. The placement of my name in the film credits also changed, and this means a lot for a character artist like me.”
The actor had also revealed that she never went to London to shoot for the film. Farida said, “Most of the film was shot at Filmistan studios, including our London house, the song Mehdni laga ke rakhna and so many other scenes. I never went to London to shoot the film.”
On the work front, Farida’s last major role was in Saif Ali Khan and Alaya F’s Jawaani Jaaneman. If reports are to be believed, the actor has joined the cast of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi.
