Imagine this: Ed Sheeran is at a Bollywood party hosted by choreographer and director Farah Khan and the DJ is playing his tunes. After a few drinks down, Farah yells at the DJ, “Why are you playing such downers? This sounds like a funeral!” The DJ, a little confused, replies, “Ma’am, these are Ed Sheeran songs!”
This incident happened a few years ago when Ed was in India for a concert tour. You might be surprised to know that Farah who hosted the star-studded party Ed attended, had no clue who he was! During her recent appearance on The Great Indian Kapil Show, the Om Shanti Om director recalled the time when at her party, she found herself yelling at the DJ for playing “funeral music”. Little did she know, it was the “Photograph” singer’s music!
“After a few drinks down, I called out the DJ and told him, ‘Kya maiyyat ke gaane baja raha hai (Why are you playing sad music as if we are attending a funeral).’ The DJ then told me, ‘Ma’am yeh Ed Sheeran ke gaane baja raha hoon (I am playing Ed Sheeran songs).’ I reacted, ‘Oh, Ed Sheeran ke gaane? Baja baja (Oh, these are Ed Sheeran songs. Go ahead and play).'”
Farah Khan revealed that she had no idea who Ed Sheeran was, and had never heard his music. In a chat with Bharti Singh and Haarsh Limbachiyaa on their podcast, Farah shared that she had to ask Abhishek Bachchan who Ed was.
She shared that a cousin of hers, who works as a lawyer at a music company, asked her if she could show Ed around Mumbai as he was travelling to India for his concerts. “I didn’t know who Ed Sheeran was so I thought it was one of his friends. I didn’t bother,” she recalled. Her cousin asked her again and Farah ignored him again. When Farah’s aunt called her to ask about the same, she wondered why everyone was following up on the matter so she asked Abhishek Bachchan, ‘Who is Ed Sheeran?’ Abhishek said, ‘He’s just the number one singer in the world.’”
Farah Khan revealed that the “Shape of You” hitmaker had “so much fun” and “didn’t want to hear his own music, he wanted Bollywood music” at the party. She added, “He left at 2 am as he had a concert the next day. He said I could stay here till morning but I have to perform tomorrow. The next day, he sent me 20 front-row VIP passes for his show. But I didn’t go.”
Ed Sheeran first toured India in 2017 and performed once again in March 2024.
