Actor Esha Deol, who recently announced her separation from husband Bharat Takhtani, once spoke about never wanting to have an arranged marriage. Esha and Bharat knew each other as children in the same school, but began dating when they grew up. They tied the knot in 2012 and have two daughters – Radhya, 6, and Miraya, 4.
Chatting with Rediff on the sidelines of the release of her 2007 film Just Married, Esha said that she would probably run away if she’s forced to have an arranged marriage. “The only reason I did this film is because I know I will never have an arranged marriage. If I am told to do so, I will be a runaway bride! I admire those people who are ready to tie the knot with unknown people and do things to please their elders,” she said.
She was also asked what marriage means to her, and she said, “Dependability on your partner. I think at times, it is unnecessary to depend on others but I still feel it is something that everyone should experience.” Esha said in the interview that she hadn’t found the right person to settle down with, but wanted to get married because she wants to have children.
Esha and Bharat had spoken often about their relationship and married life over the years. In an interview with Filmfare, Bharat described her as very ‘possessive’, and in her book Amma Mia, published in 2020, Esha shared that she became more ‘mature, responsible’ after she got married. She also revealed that she ‘couldn’t roam around the house in my shorts and ganjis like I used to’ after she began living with Bharat’s family.
Announcing their separation, Esha and Bharat told Delhi Times, “We have mutually and amicably decided to part ways. Through this shift in our lives, the best interests and welfare of our two children is and will be of utmost importance to us. We’d appreciate our privacy is respected.”
