Vikrant Massey, who was last seen in the hit film 12th Fail, recently said that there are repercussions for expressing one’s opinion in public and added that because of these repercussions, one tends to become more individualistic. “There have been people who have taken a particular side and they have faced repercussions for it. We don’t live in a utopian world, ” he said.
In the conversation on YouTube channel Unfiltered by Samdish, when Vikrant was asked if Aamir Khan also had to face repercussions for his statement about intolerance in the country, which was unearthed again in 2022 before the release of Laal Singh Chaddha, the actor said, “Nahi tha? (Did he not face it?)” He then added, “This is it. What can we do about it? Then you go back to the old adage which says ignorance is bliss. Apna ghar baar dekho, apna parivar dekho. (Take care of you house, your family).”
Vikrant added that “we don’t live in a utopian world” and “everyone has a family to look after, everyone has bills to pay.” When the host brought up actor Naseeruddin Shah, who is very blunt with his political opinions, the actor said that Naseer is a very different place in his life now. “Naseeruddin Shah can say all of that now, at the age of 70,” Vikrant said.
The 12th Fail actor said that the world is “far more aggressive” now and with the rise of social media, the access to multiple opinions is quite easy now. “These perspectives were always there but because these are so easily accessible at the click of a button… there are multiple points of view and multiple perspectives and a lot of people shy away from it and it’s within their rights to go out there and say that ‘yes, I am apolitical’, even if they are not,” he said.
On Wednesday, Vikrant issued an apology for a 2018 tweet. He wrote, “In context to one of my Tweets way back in 2018, I’d like to say a few words: It was never my intention to hurt, malign or disrespect the Hindu community.” He continued, “But as I reflect in hindsight about a Tweet made in jest, I also release the distasteful nature of it. The same could have been said without adding the cartoon which was published in a newspaper. And I’d with utmost humility like to apologise to each and everyone who has been hurt 🙏🏽”
