Vikramaditya Motwane’s 2013 film Lootera, based on author O Henry’s 1907 short story The Last Leaf, had received a mixed response from the audience upon its release. But it gained critical acclaim. However, the trade experts’ verdict about the film was not great, as it failed to meet their expectations. But Motwane recently shared that the movie was not a flop, and claimed that nobody lost any money on it.
While speaking to Humans of Cinema, Motwane said that people assumed that Lootera had failed because of the huge expectations that they had for a Ranveer Singh film. He said, “When Lootera came out, everyone was like, ‘Flop, flop, flop’. The fact of the matter is the film actually made money. Nobody lost money on that film. It’s just that the fact that being Ranveer Singh’s next film or Sonakshi Sinha’s next film, there were expectations of a Rs 30 crore weekend, but it didn’t happen. That’s not that film, anyway. It was clear when you read the script that it isn’t going to be that kind of film.” Ranveer essayed the role of a robber in Lootera and Sonakshi Sinha gave what is widely considered to be her career’s best performance as Pakhi Roy Choudhary. The film managed to earn Rs 46 crore.
The filmmaker, who is currently basking in the success of his recently released web series Jubilee, also said that both Lootera and his other major bomb, Bhavesh Joshi Superhero (2018), were not marketed well. Motwane said, “Marketing plays a huge part in a lot of movies. I believe some of Bhavesh’s failure was its marketing failure as well. There was something that didn’t click in the sense of being able to tap into the real audience that might have come in had they known the thing. Song was a bad idea. Even in Lootera, the expectations from it were set like a classic love story, which it wasn’t really. It was pitching off the film from a pure marketing perspective as for what the first trailer should have been, what the first impression should have been, they should have set the expectations right because it tends to happen that you expect something and you get something.”
Bhavesh Joshi Superhero was a vigilante drama starring Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor in the lead role. The film couldn’t find it’s audience in theatres, but it has since developed a cult fanbase. It featured Arjun Kapoor in a special song number.
