The CBFC is back in news, and this time it’s Abhishek Chaubey’s Udta Punjab that has been caught in the cross hairs. This follows the censor board taking objection to Hansal Mehta’s Aligarh, to giving a U/A certificate to The Jungle Book, saying it was “too scary” for kids — all of which evoked much ire amid the film fraternity. In the case of Shahid Kapoor-starrer Udta Punjab, a film on drug abuse in the state, the CBFC wants most of the cuss words to be edited out, despite the fact that the film’s makers had applied for adult certification.
CBFC’s sudden move has raised eyebrows as the film’s promo, which came out earlier this month, was released under adult certification without any cuts and beeps. “It was surprising to everyone within the board that the promo didn’t have to face a serious snip and (CBFC chairperson Pahlaj) Nihalani, who has earned a reputation for his ‘sanskari’ stand, let it pass. But if that was cleared, why is there a problem with the film?” asked a CBFC member who did not wish to be named. (Read: Udta Punjab faces Censor Board hurdle)
The move has irked many in the film and media fraternity, and they’ve taken to Twitter to vent their anger. Take a dekko.
Hansal Mehta: I was convinced that the govt would do nothing with recommendations from any committee on censorship. I was right. #UdtaPunjab
Shruti Seth: Well done #CensorBoard Clearly, no political agenda with decimating #UdtaPunjab Must be exhausting keeping India so #sanskari
Ashoke Pandit: If #UdtaPunjab release has been delayed by #CBFC just because of excessive swearing then it’s sad.

Tanmay Bhat: What’s this about censor board and udta punjab
Ashish Shakya: Pretty sure there are Iodex-munching, lizard-snorting addicts out there who make better decisions than the censors. #UdtaPunjab. Glad to see Punjab authorities tackling the crippling problem of films depicting reality. Truly commendable. #UdtaPunjab
