Twinkle Khanna, the daughter of veteran actors Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia, recently shared that her first paid job was far from the glamorous world of Bollywood. In the latest episode of The Icons, where she was in conversation with Johnny Lever, Twinkle was asking the comedian about his earliest job and then opened up about how she became part of the workforce.
Twinkle shared, “My first job was to deliver fish and prawns. My grandmother’s sister had a fish company. That was my first job. When I used to tell someone, they would say, ‘Tu machhiwali hai? (Are you a fisherwoman?)”
Twinkle Khanna shared this anecdote and then Johnny Lever spoke about his difficult childhood in the slums of Dharavi where he would find it difficult to make ends meet. Johnny shared that since his father was an alcoholic, they would have to ask his uncle for money for household expenses.
The comedian-actor shared that while he was still in school, he started working at the liquor shop so he could contribute to the household. “We used to live in the slums so when I came back from school, I used to work at the liquor shop. The money I used to earn, I would give it for the household expenses and I would earn a little something for myself as well,” he said.
Johnny Lever also shared that at one point he would sell pens on the footpath but that turned out to be a difficult trade as well. Sometimes, when he couldn’t sell any pens, he would mimic film actors so people would get entertained and buy his pens. “I used to sell pens on the footpath. When the pens wouldn’t sell, I would mimic the actors and that’s how I would make a sale,” he said.
