The Mehta Boys trailer: Father-son relationships in India are often complicated, shaped by patriarchal expectations that leave little room for emotional openness. While older men feel pressured to assert their masculinity all the time, the younger lot are raised with notions such as “boys don’t cry”. As a result, many fathers and sons grow distant over time, unable to communicate their feelings, even living as near-strangers under the same roof. The upcoming Prime Video original movie The Mehta Boys explores such a father-son dynamic.

Helmed by renowned Bollywood actor Boman Irani, who plays a key role in the movie alongside Avinash Tiwary and Shreya Chaudhry, The Mehta Boys explores the raw, unfiltered complexities of a father-son relationship burdened by misunderstandings and unspoken emotions. The film’s official trailer, which has just been released, sets the stage for an emotionally charged story. The 146-second trailer opens with Boman’s character moving into his son’s (played by Avinash) apartment for two days. From the outset, their fractured relationship is evident with Boman’s character being a grumpy and stubborn old man, while his son, visibly uninterested in mending their relationship, finds himself irritated by his father’s every action.

“After the loss of his mother, Amay, a struggling young architect is forced to live for 48 hours with the one person he cannot stand, his father. It seems like a recipe for disaster. Wrong! It’s much worse,” reads the film’s official IMDb synopsis. What begins as playful banter soon unravel into raw confrontations, as long-buried resentments surface.

As the promo video progresses, it becomes clear that The Mehta Boys is more than just a story about familial discord — it is also a thoughtful exploration of human connections. “Will the young architect crumble or will this bumpy ride help him rebuild his relationship with his crabby old man?”

Opening up about his directorial debut venture, Boman Irani says, “For me, The Mehta Boys is an extremely personal journey. The relationship between a father and son is one of the most complex and emotionally charged dynamics. With this film, I wanted to delve into how the bond between two people who deeply care for each other can be tested by time, misunderstandings, and unresolved issues. It is a story that has stayed with me for years, and I’m thrilled to finally share it with audiences in India and across the world on Prime Video. I am deeply grateful to the talented cast for bringing their characters to life with such depth and authenticity, enriching the story in every way.”

Commenting on his character, Avinash Tiwary shares, “Amay’s character is layered with complexities, torn between familial loyalty and personal resentment. Certain circumstances force him into an intense and transformative encounter with his father, reshaping his perspective in ways he never anticipated. Portraying this journey was both challenging and rewarding. I am proud to be part of a movie that explores such relatable themes of family ties and reconciliation.”

Mentioning that she plays the role of Zara, Amay’s girlfriend, Shreya Chaudhry says, “She is a strong, independent woman with her own perspective. She plays a key role in encouraging Amay to confront his issues with his father instead of continuing to pretend they don’t exist. What I loved about my character was that she is not in the shadows as someone’s love interest, but has a meaningful role in shaping the story with her own strength and individuality, even though the storyline revolves around the dynamics of a father-son relationship. I am incredibly proud to bring this story to life along with talented actors such as Boman Irani, Avinash Tiwary and Puja Sarup.”

Puja Sarup, who portrays Anu — a young woman caught between her father and brother’s strained relationship — shares: “Anu, in many ways, is the anchor of the story. As the daughter and sister caught in the crossfire between two stubborn men, my character tries to be the voice of reason, tries to step into her mother’s shoes. It has been an incredible experience, collaborating with Boman, Avinash and Shreya.”

Co-written by Boman Irani and Alexander Dinelaris — one of the Oscar-winning screenwriters behind Birdman (2014) — The Mehta Boys is set to premiere exclusively on Prime Video on February 7.
