Actress Tanvi Azmi has always exuded a very strong stance on screen — even as she has played characters that have been loving and caring, she chose never to be docile on-screen. In real life too, the actress believes she is rebellious, but the trait remained dormant for quite some time. Her most striking performance has been that of Ranveer Singh‘s mother in Bajirao Mastani, and was recently seen in Amazon Prime’s web series Dil, Dosti, Dilemma which also stars Anushka Sen in the lead role.

In the show, Tanvi plays Anushka’s grandmother, and the two are often seen at loggerheads over several differences. Recently in an exclusive conversation with Indianexpress.com when Tanvi Azmi was asked if she was rebellious while growing up, she recalled the exact moment when it started, “I was an obedient child and then something happened… I always had some rebellious blood in me, but it was dormant. However, there came a point when I rebelled and how! It happened when I got married and it was a lot. I felt like the whole of Mumbai had erupted because a Brahmin Maharashtrian girl had married a Muslim man and it was just like the end of the world for many. For me, that was when rebellion began and it stayed, it just never went away.”

In her latest web series, Tanvi plays a grandmother who is soft-hearted yet stern. When asked if her real-life grandparents were a strong reference point for this character, the actress said, “I grew up in a joint family, I know what it feels like to have so many people around you constantly. So it felt like a very familiar surrounding. I miss my grandfather deeply, who pampered me no end and I thought that’s how men treat women. I was the apple of his eye, he would carry me till I was 8 years old. What is seen in our show is not something children of today will experience, especially in the urban society where parents don’t send their kids away to live with grandparents.”

She further added how the digital world has affected kids today, “I feel a great sense of loss for today’s kids. They can’t have simple conversations, today you have the world in your hand so how is it that it only becomes about Instagram and social media, isn’t there more? What happens when it suddenly goes away? Then what are you going to do? As kids every Sunday we would go and plant trees, clean streets, we do any physical activity, but I don’t see that now.”

Tanvi Azmi hails from a family of achievers, daughter-in-law of poet and lyricist Kaifi Azmi and actor Shaukat Azmi, sister-in-law of Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar, and wife of cinematographer Baba Azmi, does she ever got bogged down with this pressure of hailing from such a notable household. Tanvi explains, “It feels great to be a part of a family like that, but it never daunted me. It never made me feel like I need to achieve what others had achieved. That is their journey, I am happy with my journey as long as I get good and diverse work. My focus and my thrust is to do work that challenges me. My focus has never been that this person in my family has done this much or that much. We all have our strengths and weaknesses, so I have never compared myself to anybody or felt lesser because of the achievers in my family. I feel extremely proud of each and every one of them.”

Tanvi Azmi is an actor who has always believed in focusing on the craft rather than the glitz and glamour that comes as a part and parcel of this industry. An actor since 1985, getting respect is her highest priority. When asked what is it like being a celebrity in 2024, Tanvi Azmi shares, “I think it is very difficult right now for celebrities, the amount of pressure they have on them for the promotions, launching their films, and going to a million places. I have great and huge amounts of respect for all of them, they are all pushed beyond their means and they all manage it. Of course, there are many perks you get with being a celebrity, but please spare me, I am okay not being one. If I get respect, I am more than okay with it.”

On the work front, before Dil, Dosti, Dilemma, Tanvi Azmi was seen in the show Maamla Legal Hai. She has also starred in a Marathi film this year called Ole Aale.
