Anupam Kher recently announced his next project, where he will essay the role of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. He also shared a still from the film on social media. His post garnered mixed responses, and seems like actor Swastika Mukherjee did not like the idea. Without naming anyone, the Tollywood star took to Twitter to share that no one should play Rabindranath Tagore.
“No one should play Robi Thakur. Leave the man alone,” Swastika wrote, hinting at her disapproval of Kher essaying Tagore on screen. A number of Bengalis echoed her thoughts as they dropped similar comments on the post.
One of her followers wrote, “No one should play Rabi Thakur for a purpose,” while another added, “Bengal knows him well, rest of India not so much. His story should be told and cinema is a good medium. But all depends which phase of his life is being depicted. If it’s just the latter days at Shantiniketan then that is very less of a story.” Another comment read, “If we are able to portray his personal with dignity.. a film can be made.. coz I also have seen that the respect he receives in Bengal, no one cares about that throughout India. So we must proceed in a good manner.”
Last week, Anupam Kher took to Twitter to announce that he will play the celebrated poet in his 538th film. Posting the first look of him as Tagore, he wrote, “Delighted to portray #Gurudev #RabindranathTagore in my 538th project. Will reveal the details in due course. Ye mere saubhagya hai ki mujhe gurudev ko parde par saakaar karne ka saubhagya parpt hua hai. Jald hi is film ki adhik jankaari apke sath sanjha krunga (It is my fortune that I have got the privilege of bringing alive Gurudev on screen! I will share more information about this film soon).”
On Monday, Kher met Oscar winning music composer MM Keeravaani. In a video shared on his social media handles, the actor looked overwhelmed as he held Keeravaani’s Oscar trophy for RRR song “Naatu Naatu”. In the video, Kher told Keeravaani, “What a great, amazing honour to hold sir’s Oscar in my hand. The world has applauded you and India is so proud of you and the fact that you gave it in my hands. One day I will make you proud.” Returning the kind words, Keeravaani said, “And a what a great moment to be with you sir. You have already made us proud.”
On the work front, Anupam Kher also has Vivek Agnihotri directorial The Vaccine War, Telugu film Tiger Nagewara Rao, and Kannada film Ghost in the pipeline.
