Filmmaker Anil Sharma recalled the mood on the morning of August 11, when his film Gadar 2 was released in theatres across the country. He said in an interview that he woke up to audience reaction videos from early morning shows, and recalled an emotional conversation that he had with actor Sunny Deol on the phone.
In a chat with ETimes, Anil Sharma tipped his hat to the marketing team at Zee Studios, and said that they arranged for a handful of 3 am shows for the film, without telling him about it because they knew that he’d say no. He said that he was woken up by his wife, who immediately told him that early reports about the film were very positive. He said that he was surprised to see a bunch of audience reaction videos online, and spent the next hour watching them.
But the mood changed when he phoned Sunny Deol, who told him that he’d been up since 6 am and was aware that Zee had arranged for 3 am shows. Anil said that Sunny became very emotional on the phone, and started weeping. “I heard him cry for the first time. He said, ‘Sharma ji, we did it’,” he said. After Sunny started crying, Anil and his wife teared up as well. “It was very emotional,” he added.
Gadar 2, a sequel to 2001’s Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, has been massively successful. The film opened to Rs 40 crore on day one, but peaked on Independence Day, when it made Rs 55 crore. So far, the film has made nearly Rs 420 crore in India, and is currently the year’s second-biggest Hindi film behind Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan.
The film also stars Utkarsh Sharma, Simratt Kaur, Manish Wadhwa and others. Anil Sharma had revealed in a recent interview with News18 that the film was made on a budget of Rs 60 crore, which means that its ROI is exemplary. There have already been talks of a Gadar 3.
