Sunny Deol and Hema Malini connected for the first time due to Dimple Kapadia, a decade after Dharmendra accepted her as wife: ‘I told Sunny…’

Hema Malini and Sunny Deol started talking almost a decade after she married his father Dharmendra, and this conversation took place because of Dimple Kapadia.

When Hema Malini and Dharmendra got married in 1980, it was well known that he was married with four children. The rumours of his relationship with Hema Malini had been going on for years, and when the two ultimately tied the knot, one expected that there would be significant backlash from his first family. Three years after their wedding, Dharmendra’s son Sunny Deol made his debut in the movies with Betaab. And while it seemed like Dharmendra’s relationship with his first family hadn’t suffered any major setback, Hema didn’t receive the same treatment. She revealed that the first time she actually spoke to Sunny at length was almost a decade after her marriage with Dharmendra, and this conversation also, was largely about work.

Dimple Kapadia, who had a close association with Sunny Deol and Hema Malini, became the bridge between the two during the shoot of Hema’s directorial debut, Dil Aashna Hai. Hema and Dimple shared a close friendship, and so, when Hema was making her first film, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Divya Bharti, she cast Dimple in a pivotal role. Dimple was supposed to participate in a scene that involved a bit of risk, and so, she called Sunny to the shoot for support. It was here that Sunny came up to Hema and ensured Dimple’s safety.

Hema recalled this incident in her biography ‘Hema Malini: Beyond the Dream Girl’ by Ram Kamal Mukherjee and shared, “I wanted to shoot a paragliding scene with Mithun (Chakraborty) in Dil Aashna Hai, and there was an aeroplane scene which was required for a song sequence,” she shared and added that a few days before the shoot, the pilot had met with an accident. “Dimple was very scared to do the shoot. She informed Sunny, and out of concern, Sunny came and met me. I assured Sunny that she would be safe, and that’s when I started talking to him,” she shared.

During the launch of the book in 2017, Hema opened up about her relationship with Dharmendra’s sons, Sunny and Bobby, and recalled that Sunny was the first one to come and see her when she met with a car accident in 2015. “Sunny was the first person to come and see me at home. He saw that the right doctor was there for the stitches that were done on my face,” she said and added, “Whenever it is necessary he (Sunny) is always there, along with Dharamji.”

Previously, Esha Deol, who is Hema and Dharmendra’s daughter, also spoke about her relationship with her half-brothers Sunny and Bobby. She shared, in the same biography, “I don’t need to tell the world about the relationship between myself and my half-brothers. I know the world talks about our relationships in different ways. But the Deol family members do not want to show off their relationships.”

The siblings have been photographed together in public on many occasions. However, Hema and her daughter did not attend Sunny’s son’s wedding in 2023.
