Sunny Deol is often perceived as a shy person and this is probably one of the reasons why he likes to be an utter professional on film sets. However, if anyone tried to pull a prank on him, the actor would get agitated. Recalling a similar incident during the shoot of his 1989 film Chaalbaaz with Sridevi, Sunny said that he would always be alert of what she was up to when he was on camera.
Sunny was speaking at Aap Ki Adalat with Rajat Sharma, where he was talking about how his co-star’s behaviour would bother him sometimes. “Once this happened with Sridevi where I decided to not spare her. My one eye would be on my back. Tu kya kar rahi hai, main bhi karunga. (What you are doing, I will also do) Because the film was of that genre, and that’s why it didn’t matter if you just get out of your character and do a one-upmanship,” Sunny said about Sridevi. Sridevi passed away in 2018.
Sunny shared in the same interview that he saw a few co-actors feeling insecure, which led to them behaving in a strange way on set. He said, “Initially, when I joined the industry, it happened. I used to act but some of our colleagues – I cannot name them – behind the camera would do some strange behaviour. The director would not stop them and then I would get irritated thinking, ‘Are we here to act or to fight with one another?’. They would get carried away in one-upmanship and do things which they felt would improve the scene.” He continued, “So this insecurity is there in many actors. This ruins the film and I didn’t want to work with such actors.”
Sunny had an infamous fallout with Shah Rukh Khan during the shooting of 1993 Darr after which the two actors never saw eye to eye. However, during the recent blockbuster release of Sunny’s Gadar 2 in 2023, both actors buried their differences and celebrated the film together.
The actor will next be seen in Aamir Khan’s production Lahore 1947, which will be directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. Aamir’s production house had issued a statement announcing the film. The post read, “I and the entire team at AKP, are most excited and happy to announce our next, starring Sunny Deol, directed by Raj Kumar Santoshi, titled Lahore, 1947. We look forward to collaborating with the immensely talented Sunny and one of favourite directors Raj Santoshi. The journey we have embarked on promises to be most enriching.”
