Director Om Raut’s Adipurush, the epic film based on the Ramayana, has been out in theatres for almost a week, and has created a lot of controversy over its dialogues. The film’s visual effects and storytelling have also been criticised by the audience. Now, Sunil Lahri, the actor who played Lakshman in Ramanand Sagar’s television adaptation of the Ramayana, has said that he has high hopes from Kangana Ranaut’s interpretation of Sita in her upcoming film Sita: The Incarnation, directed by Alaukik Desai.
In a conversation with Live Hindustan, Sunil said that he has complete confidence in Kangana’s creative choices, and believes that she will not do anything that “tampers with culture.” He said, “I have complete faith in Kangana’s film. She will not do anything like this, and whatever she does will only get respect for this character (Sita). I can’t speak about others but based on my own experience, I only want to say that one should not tamper with culture.”
Kangana thanked Sunil for his comments and shared a screenshot of the same with folded hands emoji.
In an earlier chat with the same publication, Sunil was asked about his opinion on Alia Bhatt playing the role of Sita in Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming film based on the Ramayana. Although no official announcement about the film has been made as of now, it has been speculated that Ranbir Kapoor will play Lord Rama, and Alia will be cast as Sita.
Sunil said, “Ranbir can probably do it, but Alia cannot.” He added that there is a certain “kind of sensitivity that is needed for Sita, that’s not there (with Alia).” He continued, ‘Maybe five years ago, Alia could have done it. But now, her face shows harshness and maturity. Sita’s face needs to be innocent, and that that doesn’t reflect anymore.” Insisting that Ranbir is the right actor to play Ram, he said, “Ranbir can still play Ram. His face has calmness, and a little naughtiness as well. So he can play Ram.”
In an earlier chat with indianexpress.com, Sunil had criticised Adipurush and said, “I really cannot understand who were they (Adipurush makers) catering to. Na narration, na story na characterisation. Sab kuch haywire hai. Different dikhane ke naam pe satyanash kar diya (Everything is haywire. They destroyed everything to make it different).”
