Actor Sheeba Akashdeep Sabir, who was recently seen in Jigra and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, recently shared an intriguing anecdote about the late legendary actor Sunil Dutt and his initial dislike for Amitabh Bachchan’s iconic baritone voice. According to Sheeba, Dutt cast Bachchan in a mute role in the 1971 film Reshma Aur Shera because he wasn’t fond of his voice. She also revealed that her father-in-law Manmohan Sabir, who produced Bachchan’s debut film Saat Hindustani, shared a similar sentiment about the actor’s deep voice.
In an interview with Siddharth Kannan on his YouTube channel, Sheeba recounted her father-in-law’s words: “He told me, ‘Ek hero aata tha humare ghar mein aur aake mere pairon mein baithta tha. Humko lagta tha kaisi se awaaz hai iske, gunjti hui (A hero used to come to our house and sit at my feet. I used to find his voice strange, it was booming).’”
She continued, “In fact, Dutt sahab (Sunil Dutt) told me, ‘We hated his voice. His voice sounds similar to a radio jockey.’ They made him play a mute character in Dutt sahab’s movie. It’s the same baritone voice that we now associate with him. Nobody understood that the voice will become bigger than the actor himself.” Apart from playing the lead role, Sunil Dutt also directed Reshma Aur Shera.
Last year, Amitabh Bachchan approached the Delhi High Court to prevent the misuse of his distinctive voice. The actor filed a lawsuit to protect his name, voice, and image from being used without his permission to promote products and services. The court granted an interim injunction, preventing individuals from infringing on the veteran actor’s “publicity rights” as a celebrity.
On the professional front, Amitabh is currently hosting Kaun Banega Crorepati Season 16. His latest film Vettaiyan, which marks his onscreen reunion with Rajinikanth after a 32-year gap, is presently playing in theatres.
