Sudha Murty recently appeared on Kunal Vijayakar’s YouTube show Khane Mein Kya Hai where she spoke about eating at vegetarian restaurants while traveling abroad because she is skeptical about restaurants serving non vegetarian food as the same utensils could have been used for both. Her statement caused a lot of controversy as many saw her approach as casteist. Now, Kunal has spoken about the incident, and said that it is no one’s business what anyone likes to eat.

In a chat with Cyrus Broacha on his podcast, Kunal opened up the incident and said, “I just asked her how is the food at 10 Downing Street so she said I eat at my son’s house because I am purely vegetarian.” Sudha’s son-in-law Rishi Sunak is the Prime Minister of UK. He added, “I have a feeling that because the son’s house is probably purely vegetarian and she was very sort of ‘I don’t eat in non veg restaurants because I am a pure vegetarian.’ Even if the food is cooked in utensils… a lot of people are like that, it’s not only Sudha Murty, you know enough people who don’t want to touch non veg.”

Kunal said that this turned “into a controversy with this whole purity and Brahmanical touch to it.” When speaking of the controversy, Kunal said, “I am so petrified of the world we live in. I just tend not to comment.” When asked if such controversies increase the viewership of his show, Kunal said, “It gets a sh*t load of views. The numbers go up. In a way, it helps the show.”

Speaking about how Sudha expressed her choices, Kunal said, “What we eat is our business, nobody else’s business honestly. And it is her business what she wants to eat, it is her choice.”

On the show, Kunal Vijayakar had asked Sudha Murty about her food choices while traveling abroad and she said, “I am adventurous in my work, not in my food. I am in fact scared. I am a pure vegetarian, I don’t even eat eggs, or garlic. What I am scared of is that the same spoon will be used for both, vegetarian and non vegetarian food. It weighs on my mind a lot! Hence when we go out, I only search for veg restaurants.”
