It wasn’t easy for Suchitra Krishnamoorthi to slap Shah Rukh Khan in Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, but the actor did it after multiple takes and a whole lot of tears. Suchitra and Shah Rukh featured in the 1994 coming-of-age romantic comedy, which was directed by Kundan Shah.
In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Suchitra was asked about the slap sequence in the film, which marked her film debut. She starred in the film as Anna while Shah Rukh played Sunil. Suchitra said the team did “a lot of takes” for the sequence, which was tough for her to pull off.
“I started crying, because I had to slap Shah Rukh and it was going take after take. Finally, I burst out crying, because I couldn’t do it anymore. I was like, ‘How can I slap someone?’ Kundan was particular that it be real, we wouldn’t do play acting. Shah Rukh of course was a gentleman, so he wouldn’t say anything but I could see him (flinch). I burst out crying and said I can’t do it anymore! By then Kundan had his take, but it was very painful. Shah Rukh is a pro, but I burst out crying because I couldn’t do it,” she recalled.
Shah Rukh’s turn as Sunil in Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, one of his earliest films, is still considered one of his best performances. The actor has also listed the film as his favourite.
Suchitra, meanwhile, went on to star in other Hindi films like Anil Kapoor starrer My Wife’s Murder, Rann, Romeo Akbar Walter and was recently seen in Prime Video’s Guilty Minds.
