Actor Sonakshi Sinha spoke about marrying Zaheer Iqbal, and muting all the noise surrounding their wedding. Several rumours were floated online in the days leading up to their wedding, primarily due to certain comments made by her father, Shatrughan Sinha. Her brothers, Luv and Kussh’s decision to not attend the wedding further fuelled speculation about whether the family was on board or not. But in a recent interview, Sonakshi said that her father was as supportive as he could be, although she didn’t address her brothers’ absence on her big day. She also said that she didn’t face any sort of pressures from Zaheer’s family to convert to Islam.
In an interview with Hauterrfly, Sonakshi said, “Zaheer and I weren’t really paying attention to religion. We are two people who love each other and want to get married to each other. He didn’t enforce his religion on me, and I am not enforcing my religion on him. This wasn’t even a discussion. We appreciate and understand each other’s cultures. They follow certain traditions at their house, I follow certain traditions at my house. He participates in my Diwali pooja, and I participate in his rituals. And that’s all that matters.”
Sonakshi said that she respects Zaheer’s culture, and that neither he nor his family imposed their beliefs on her. She continued, “Under the circumstances, the best way to get marriage was the Special Marriage Act, where I, as a Hindu woman, do not need to change my religion, and he, as a Muslim man, can remain a Muslim man. It’s as simple as that. I was never asked, ‘Are you going to convert?’ We love each other, and we’re going to get married.”
Sonakshi admitted, however, that she and Zaheer muted their comments on Instagram ahead of their wedding, because the speculation and the negativity was getting out of hand. “On my big day, mujhe yeh bakwas dekhni hi nahi hai (I didn’t want to be near this nonsense),” she said. Sonakshi and Zaheer tied the knot in a private ceremony last year, following which Shatrughan Sinha made several comments about how supportive he was, while also explaining why his sons were offended at the union.
