Determining Farah Khan’s best film as a director might involve a discussion between Main Hoon Na (2004) and Om Shanti Om (2007), with fans leaning on either side equally. But one song from the latter gave Bollywood one of its most iconic moments of the 2000s. The track ‘Deewangi Deewangi’ had a cameo by practically every big Bollywood star of that time, and actor Shilpa Shetty, who was also a part of the song, recently talked about how director Farah was being very careful about every single detail during the filming.

While making an appearance on Farah’s YouTube channel, both director and actor were talking about their friendship, and Farah said, “I am so happy that we have been friends for so long, and it really is just a friendship because we have never worked on a film together.” Shlipa pointed out that they have worked on some television shows together and also in an ad for Nirma many years ago. “Apart from that, the only time we have worked together is during my appearance in Om Shanti Om, when you made me wear that saree. People still don’t know the real story behind that shot, though,” added Shilpa.

Farah urged her to tell the story, and Shilpa said, “We had prepared for the shoot, and Farah didn’t like the length of the saree.” to which the director replied, “I am a perfectionist.” Shilpa continued, “So Farah cancelled the shoot, and I remember that even Shah Rukh was there, and he said, ‘Let’s shoot tomorrow.’ So I came the next day, and we fixed the problem, and Farah kept working even though she was pregnant with triplets.” Farah thanked her and said, “You were there for barely 10-15 seconds, but everyone remembers you for it. It was very sweet of you to come back, and tab hum velle the, agle din shoot kar sakte the (We were very free back then; we could afford to shoot the next day).” Farah hung on to the pregnant remark and said, “And you were there flaunting your thin waist; I remember just looking at you. Even after having two kids you have the same waist; none of it has been wasted.”

There have been many such stories from the sets of Om Shanti Om that give the fans some insight into how the film was made. Action director Sham Kaushal told podcast host Aman Aujla that shooting the scene where Shah Rukh tries to save his love interest from a burning building was one of the most “testing” sequences of his career. He said, “There were so many moments of stress because you also had to put off the fire within seconds of lighting it. If someone commits a mistake anywhere, it could be very disastrous. I swear by God, there were so many times I’d go to the side and cry. I felt I’d get a heart attack.”

Directed by Farah, the cast of Om Shanti Om included Shah Rukh, Deepika Padukone, Arjun Rampal. Shreyas Talpade, Kirron Kher, and Javaid Sheikh.
