Shah Rukh Khan and Manisha Koirala worked together in the 1999 film Dil Se, and Shah Rukh was already one of the biggest stars of Hindi cinema. While promoting the upcoming Netflix series Heeramandi, Manisha spoke about her experience of working with Shah Rukh and what impressed her about him.
In a chat with Zoom, Manisha called Shah Rukh “wise in some sense,” and said that he’s probably the country’s biggest star. “What I really liked about Shah Rukh even back then, despite being a big star, he would have his tea sitting on the floor. I really admire that no matter how big a star you are, you are not flying, you are rooted.” Mani Ratnam’s Dil Se was the only film which brought Shah Rukh and Manisha together on screen.
Previously, even director Tigmanshu Dhulia had spoken about how Shah Rukh would nap on the floor of a bus during his breaks on Dil Se’s shoot. In a chat with Mashable India, Dhulia said that Mani Ratnam would shoot on distant locations and sometimes make last-minute plans for the day. He recalled that the lunch hour was a strict one-hour break during which Shah Rukh would finish his lunch as quickly as possible and then would take a nap on the floor of the bus. “He would take a nap on the floor of the bus. His boy would just put out a simple sheet for him on the floor and he would take a power nap. Shah Rukh never said that I am sleeping there,” he shared.
Shah Rukh Khan and Mani Ratnam are yet to collaborate after Dil Se, although they recently interacted at an event, where Shah Rukh asked when the filmmaker would work with him again.
