About a decade ago, when Shah Rukh Khan appeared on The Kapil Sharma Show to promote his film Happy New Year, he pulled a prank on Kapil’s friends and co-stars Rajiv Thakur and Chandan Prabhakar. He was so convincing during the prank that both Rajiv and Chandan were left teary eyed. During the prank, SRK slammed them for mimicing him on national television. This was the first time that Rajiv Thakur, who idolised Shah Rukh Khan, had met him in person. However, the actor’s anger shook him. He recalled the experience in a new interview, and revealed SRK’s kind gesture afterwards.
In a recent interview with Siddharth Kannan, Rajiv recalled, “People often say never meet your idol, because the moment you do, they don’t remain your idol. But, in the case of Shah Rukh, the logic works in reverse. When he pulled the prank on us, I did give him the benefit of doubt. How could such big star do this to us?” It all started when, during the episode, Rajiv expressed his love for Shah Rukh’s eyebrows, and said that he wanted to sculpt his own face in Shah Rukh’s image.
Rajiv shared, “I really like his eyebrows, it adds to the depth of his eyes. I had doubts the whole time, as Kapil was trying to find a window for SRK. He said, ‘Rajiv is great fan of yours, he does great mimicry’. Now, they thought that after this Shah Rukh Khan can pull his prank, but I did it very well and entire audience gave me a standing ovation. This made it difficult for Kapil and Shah Rukh sir to move forward with their prank.”
He added, “When Kapil saw that the prank couldn’t take off, he forced Chandan to do some mimicry. This gave SRK a chance to yell at us, and that’s how he found a way to get the prank going. He built the tension slowly, but things escalated. When he threw a photograph of me and him on the floor, I got scared. I was like, ‘Man, I am meeting him for the first time’. I cannot accept that my idol can be like this. I was teary eyed. But his acting was so good that I thought, ‘Did I really hurt him’? I was feeling so bad. But then he came from behind and hugged us, I was like…”
Rajiv shared that after the episode ended, Shah Rukh taught him how to mimic him in character. He also recalled a gesture that Shah Rukh made after the incident. He shared, “When I went to my vanity van, someone from his team came to me, and handed me something saying, ‘Shah Rukh sir sent this for you’. The photo that he threw, he got it framed. He had also left a note on it. I don’t remember when he picked it up from the stage. He won my heart.”
Years after the episode, Rajiv once visited the actor at his home, Mannat, in Mumbai. He was accompanied by Kapil Sharma. He shared, “Once, I even went to his house, he didn’t recognise me then. I had been with Kapil. He is such a great man that he walks his guests to their cars. He left the party to see us off. He stood there until our car left his home. He is definitely special.”
What happened in the SRK episode?
When Chandan mimicked the actor and Rajiv made fun of his eyebrows, Shah Rukh Khan pulled a prank on them. He pretended to be upset, and said, “When you call somebody to your show, you cannot make fun of them. They often forget their limits. I remember once they even mimicked Amit Ji. They made fun of him too. You guys might take it as prank, but we don’t find it funny. What kind of fan are you if you are making fun of us on national television? I often ignore such things but I do feel bad. You randomly call us on the show and begin to make fun of Dev Anand, Kamal Haasan. Do you guys even think before you act? Please, don’t say sorry. What do you mean by sorry? He is saying he will add cement to have eyebrows like me? What does he mean?”
Saying this, he threw the photo on the floor and got up from his seat, shocking everybody.
The actor then pointed his finger towards Rajiv and said, “Tumko tameez nahi hai bilkul. I am so angry right now.” Suddenly, the actor switched out of character, and said, ‘Do chutki sindoor ki keemat tum kya jaano Ramesh?”
