Shah Rukh Khan’s first collaboration with director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the 2002 film Devdas, saw him playing the famous literary alcoholic. In several scenes, Shah Rukh actually consumed alcohol, because he believed that it was necessary to have “aankhon mein sharab” for his character to look authentic. In a recent interview, his co-actor from the film, Tiku Talsania, revealed how Shah Rukh would drink during the shoot because he believed that it was necessary for the character.
Talking to Digital Commentary, Tiku, who played the role of Dharamdas in the film, shared, “We were shooting in the afternoon under the scorching sun and he was taking shots of rum one after another. I said, ‘What are you doing? We have to act’.” Shah Rukh responded to Tiku in a Devdas-like manner, said, “‘Sir acting toh ho jayegi. Aankhon mein sharab dikhti nahi hai na, uska kya (Sir, acting will happen. But the inebriation won’t reflect in my eyes. What about that?).”
Complimenting Shah Rukh further, Tiku added, “That is a fantastic thing. Aankh mein sharab dikhni chahiye na. (Acts a bit drunk) kar lenge par voh aankhon mein nahi dikhegi sharab toh kaise hoga? (You can pretend to be drunk, but if the alcohol doesn’t reflect in his eyes, then how would the scene work?) And for Devdas, not having daaru (alcohol) in his eyes…”
Tiku then called Shah Rukh a “genius” who “works very hard on his character.” In the same conversation, he also recalled how Shah Rukh would walk into the set of Devdas with his own shot breakdown even though Bhansali was the director of the film. The two would then sit together and discuss the breakdown that both of them had prepared and then proceed to shoot.
