Shah Rukh Khan met his fans at a small fan meet on his birthday on Sunday. At the event, he spoke about his past films and also about his son Aryan Khan’s recent directorial debut The B***ds of Bollywood. Shah Rukh admitted that while Aryan was initially sceptical about directing the web show he had written, it was SRK’s advice that encouraged him to take the leap and direct it himself.
Shah Rukh shared that though he is one of the biggest stars in the country, he refrains from giving advice to his own kids. He said, “I don’t tell them much, because I think there is not much need to tell anything to creative people. I have been working in films for 35 years, so I know I come with a big baggage. ‘Arre yaar, papa ki to sunni padegi kyunki woh Shah Rukh Khan hain’ (Will have to listen to papa because he is Shah Rukh Khan). I don’t want them to have that baggage.”
He added, “With Suhana in acting, and Aryan in writing and direction, they do it themselves. And when they need, they ask me how something is looking. And I tell them a point of view. Sometimes it’s good and sometimes bad. But I tell them tum wohi karo jo tumhe karna hai (You do what you want to do).”
However, he admitted that it was his advice that convinced Aryan Khan to direct his show. “He was not sure if he could direct or not, and whether they should hire some other director,” Shah Rukh said, adding, “But I feel that those who write and then direct themselves become better directors in a sense. So, I told him to follow his heart and direct it. Dekhenge kya hoga, kitna hi bura kar lega. We will figure it out (We’ll see what happens. How bad can you do),” he said.
“When you give this kind of freedom to creative people, they do a better job than telling them what to do,” added the actor.
Shah Rukh also spoke about the failure of his 2011 film Ra.One, which was directed by Anubhav Sinha and touted to be a big superhero film. However, the movie received mixed reviews and didn’t quite achieve its ambitious goals.
Speaking about the film’s ambition and his vision behind it, he said, “Because it was a new kind of film, and it was very close to my heart. Anubhav worked really hard to make it. So I was expecting it to start a new trend. Because I always feel that if I make a film — since my position is so good, and I’ve really been gifted by God to be in this position — then I should make things that inspire others to make such films too. Because it’s very important for our country.”
Shah Rukh envisioned Ra.One as a film that would open doors for other such projects, but it didn’t happen as he had hoped. He said, “I thought that when I make Ra.One, everyone would say, ‘It’s a superhero film!’ Not just a superhero one, but it was also about visual effects. Studios would come here, a lot of things would change. So yes, it didn’t quite live up to those expectations. But as a film, it did very well. I think people loved it even then.”
SRK also hinted at a possible sequel to Ra.One and said, “So yes, if Anubhav ever decides to… because he’s the one who made it, and I think only he can make it again. We worked really hard on it. And God willing, if the time ever feels right, we might do it again. It’s easier now anyway.”
Earlier, Anubhav Sinha had spoken about Ra.One’s failure and how it left him with no work for years, despite the film’s commercial performance. “After Ra.One, people stopped answering my calls. Everything ended. When it released in 2011, it did a business of about Rs 150 crore but bohot burai hui thi meri, that I don’t know how to make a film. No one in Mumbai would answer my call, I had no work. This continued for five-six years,” Anubhav had said in an interaction on Mashable India’s podcast with Mukesh Chhabra.
