Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan treated the shoot of Rakesh Roshan’s Karan Arjun like a vacation, and if Rakesh’s account is to be believed, they were such nuisances that work almost took a backseat. While the film is still remembered for some of its memorable dialogues, and the on-screen camaraderie of the two stars, the situation on set was completely different, as director Rakesh felt like he was trying to control two brats. In a recent interview, Rakesh recalled that Shah Rukh and Salman would shoot guns outside his hotel room late at night, just to mess with him.

Talking to Radio Nasha, Rakesh said that the two actors were quite young then (the film was released in 1995, when they were both 30 years old) and pulled a lot of pranks on set. “Sometimes I would get angry, but I would control myself because they would say whatever. Sometimes they would go out of line while making fun and I would think that I should not become like them. So, I acted like a fatherly figure with them and I tried to make them understand,” he said.

When asked what kind of pranks they would pull on set, Rakesh recalled the time when they would shoot guns outside his room just to mess with him. “They would be outside my room shooting guns. I would be sleeping at night and I would hear guns going off, bottles flying. When I would ask them ‘What are you doing?’ They would say ‘Aapko disturb kar rahe hain (we are disturbing you)’,” he recalled.

In the recently released Netflix documentary The Roshans, Shah Rukh Khan acknowledged that he was quite a handful while shooting the film and even apologised to Rakesh for his behaviour. Shah Rukh shared, “Pinkie ji scolded me a lot. ‘You are troubling Guddu (Rakesh) a lot. I didn’t expect it from you.’ Because, between Salman and me, I was slightly better behaved; at least on the face of it. I was like, ‘I didn’t do anything. It’s all his (Salman) doing.’ We were two young kids, really troubling a father figure, to be honest.”
