Writer-filmmaker Varun Grover spoke about how he perceives superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, and said that while SRK feels like a real person with a personality, Salman comes across as somebody who exists only on the big screen. In an interview with The Lallantop, Varun said that while he has worked with Shah Rukh before – he wrote songs for the films Fan and Dunki – he cannot picture himself working with Salman.
During his interaction, he was read a fan question about Shah Rukh and Salman, and whether he’d consider working with them. He said in Hindi, “I’ve technically worked with Shah Rukh already. I wrote songs for Fan and Dunki. Of course, if given the opportunity, I’d love to work with him again. Salman, I don’t know. The kind of films that he’s doing don’t align with my sensibilities.”
Varun explained, “I’ve never met Salman. I’ve met Shah Rukh. There are people who feel like they exist. Shah Rukh Khan exists. He feels real. Salman Khan exists only on the big screen; he might not exist in real life. He’s like an AI-generated character. If I ever meet him in person, maybe my perception will change. But it would still be difficult for me to believe that there’s a version of him that is separate from the version we see in films. You understand Shah Rukh’s personality; with Salman, even in his interviews, it feels like one of his characters is talking.”
A reputed comedian, Varun is perhaps best known in the film world for writing the screenplay for Masaan, and lyrics for the songs in Gangs of Wasseypur. He recently made his directorial debut with the film All India Rank, and has also served as a writer on the Netflix series Sacred Games.
