Shabana Azmi celebrates 40th wedding anniversary with Javed Akhtar: ‘He still makes me laugh’

Sharing a sweet picture with Javed Akhtar on Instagram, Shabana wrote, “It’s 40 years today since we got married and he still makes me laugh.” Many fans congratulated the couple and dropped heart emojis. Farah Khan commented, “Happy anniversary! now wish me and Shirish too… 20 years.” Another fan wrote, “Happy Anniversary. To many more years of friendship and love.” A third fan commented, “Congratulations!! It’s a blessing that he can still make you laugh. It’s rare!”

Talking about how his relationship with Shabana has evolved over the years, Javed Akhtar had said in an interview with Barkha Dutt, “Actually, we are hardly married. We are friends. My only qualification for a good marriage is this: are you friends or are you not? Shaadi-waadi toh bekaar kaam hai (The concept of marriage is nonsense). It’s a centuries-old tradition, it’s a stone that has been rolled down mountains for centuries. And as it was coming down the hill, it has collected a lot of moss, a lot of garbage, and muck. The words ‘wife’ and ‘husband’ have taken on so many different meanings. Just forget about it. Two people, irrespective of their gender, how can they live happily together? It needs mutual respect, it needs mutual consideration, it needs giving space to each other.”
