Actor Sara Ali Khan said that she and her brother, Ibrahim, would often get their way as children by playing the victim card with their parents. Sara and Ibrahim’s parents are actors Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh, who separated when the kids were very young.
In an interview with Bollywood Bubble, Sara was asked if she and Ibrahim have ever gaslit her parents. She is currently promoting her upcoming film, the mystery thriller Gaslight. Sara smiled sheepishly, and said that of course they have. “Sometimes, we played the victim card,” she said.
Asked how, she continued, “Like the obvious way, in my family dynamic. Like, ‘Abba is not here mummy, give this to us,’ at the age of 11, or, ‘Abba, you don’t live with us, give this to us,’ at the age of 15.” She joked that she still does this. “Replace 11 and 15 with 26,” she said with a laugh.
Saif and Amrita tied the knot in 1991 and divorced in 2004. Both Sara and Ibrahim were raised by their mother. She has often spoken about how her parents’ separation affected her. In an episode of Feet Up with the Stars, she said, “It’s very simple. If you see there are two options. Either live in the same house where no one is happy or live separately, where everyone is happy with their own lives, and you also get a different kind of love and warmth every time you meet.” To Harper’s Bazaar, she said, “I’ve always had the tendency to mature a bit faster than others my age. And even at the age of 9, I think I had the maturity to see that these two people living together in our home were not happy.”
Gaslight is a mystery film that will also star Vikrant Massey and Chitrangda Singh. The film will be released on Disney+ Hotstar on March 31.
