Sara Ali Khan failed to live up to the expectations of the audience in her 2020 releases Love Aaj Kal and Coolie No 1. She also accepted that her performances in both films were not good. Recently, the actor shared why it became important for her to accept her shortcomings as an actor and also revealed why she failed to deliver good performances after a promising debut with Kedarnath and a decent performance in Simmba.

Sara said that in 2019 when she was shooting for Love Aaj Kal, she was in la-la land and was far away from reality. She told Film Companion, “I like to see things for what they are, but in 2019, for several reasons, I was not able to do that. I was not seeing the mirror for what it was, I was being overtly effusive, attention seeking, people-pleasing, and loud.”

The actor, who is the daughter of Amrita Singh and Saif Ali Khan, accepted that she “miscalculated” what people like about her. Sara added, “There is a difference between being candid and being gregarious, I very often crossed that line. It won’t be false to say I was in a la-la land in 2019, which is why my work was not rooted in reality, even sometimes, my behaviour was not rooted in reality.”

Though it took her some time, Sara eventually ‘forgave’ herself for Love Aaj Kal and moved on to doing Atrangi Re, but only after a piece of advice from filmmaker Aanand L Rai. After Love Aaj Kal’s failure, Sara had told Rai to replace her in his film Atrangi Re. “He told me, ‘Beta if you fall, you do not just get up, but you get up and run. This is the kind of film in which you can either play on the backfoot or give it your all, I request you to do the latter,'” Sara recalled.

Sara has many films in the pipeline. Her next film Gaslight, co-starring Vikrant Massey and Chitrangada Singh will release on March 31 on Disney Plus Hotstar. Apart from that, she has Homi Adajania’s Murder Mubarak, Laxman Utekar’s untitled next with Vicky Kaushal, Prime Video’s Ae Watan Mere Watan and Jagan Shakti’s untitled project.
