Actor Sanjay Kapoor recently recalled his humble beginnings, growing up in a two-bedroom apartment in Mumbai’s Chembur with his siblings—Anil Kapoor, Boney Kapoor, and Reena Kapoor—and their parents. The Murder Mubarak actor shared that their tight living space became even more crowded when their grandfather joined them from Meerut. Despite these modest beginnings, Sanjay proudly noted how his father, the late producer Surinder Kapoor, prioritised his children’s experiences, ensuring they all traveled abroad before he did.
Speaking on the YouTube channel Timeout With Ankit, Sanjay said, “We lived in a two-bedroom-hall apartment in Chembur. After my grandmother passed away, my grandfather came to stay with us, taking over the room I shared with Reena. We were already close-knit, but his arrival brought us even closer. We’d sleep on mattresses in the living room. We only had one AC in the house, which was in my mom and dad’s room, so I’d sometimes sleep on the sofa in their room at night.”
He further reflected on his parents’ sacrifices, saying, “My parents didn’t go abroad until they had sent the whole family overseas first. They gave us the best schooling. We were having the best food. All my friends would wait for the food made at our house.”
Earlier, in an interview with Galatta Plus, Boney Kapoor spoke about their father’s early struggles. He recalled, “My father was brought to Bombay by Prithviraj Kapoor. My grandfather handed over my father to Prithviraj ji because my father left about 10-12 jobs. Left, in the sense, he was thrown out because he was siding with and supporting the workers, fought for their causes.” He also revealed that after marriage, his father lived in Raj Kapoor’s outhouse, where the help usually lived.
While Boney Kapoor rose to prominence as a top producer in Hindi cinema, and Anil Kapoor became one of the leading actors of the 90s, Sanjay Kapoor also had a promising start in Bollywood. However, his career slowed down around the 2000s. In 2009, he had a brief comeback with Zoya Akhtar’s Luck By Chance, but it didn’t lead to sustained success. Recently, Sanjay has been part of projects like Bloody Daddy, Merry Christmas and Murder Mubarak.
