Actor Sanjay Kapoor’s daughter, Shanaya Kapoor, is all set to make her acting debut with Vrushabha, a Telugu-Malayalam film opposite Mohanlal. She will also make her Bollywood debut in Aankhon Ki Gustakhiyaan next year. However, his father said that he doesn’t have to sit her down and dole out advice, because she has witnessed her family’s struggles first-hand. Shanaya was supposed to make her acting debut with a film produced by Karan Johar, but the project didn’t materialise.

In a conversation with Timeout With Ankit, Sanjay, who also has a teenage son named Jahaan, said that success is a very “relative term”. “It’s not necessary that if you join any field, you have to aim to be the number one. Job satisfaction is another thing. Sometimes, if someone wants to become an actor but can’t, they can become a businessman and earn a lot of money. But I feel, a dream wasn’t fulfilled there,” he said.

Talking about his own ups and downs in the industry, the actor added, “The good thing is that, like Shanaya, they have seen their father’s, the family’s, and the industry’s ups and downs. It’s not a bed of roses. One day you are at your peak and one day you are just sitting at your home. However, one shouldn’t stop chasing their dreams because of that fear. In films, the different factor is that whatever you are going through, the world knows. Everybody knows ‘Yaar iski last teen films nahi chali (His last three films didn’t work)’. But, its a part of life.”

When asked if he has had a conversation with his children regarding the pitfalls of the industry, he said, “There is no need to sit them down and tell them. They have seen it all. They have seen me not giving up. Times have also changed, its a great time to be in this industry. But, extreme hard work is required, you have to be more aware about things that are happening today. Passion should be there, but the hard work can help sustain you.”

However, Sanjay admitted that he does get nervous both as a parent and actor. “Even the biggest star gets nervous when he comes on the set on day one, because you are getting into a character for the first time. If you are not nervous, it means you are taking your stardom for granted. How can you not be nervous? Nervousness is there and it should be there. If that isn’t there, then its overconfidence,” he said.
