Comedian Samay Raina’s YouTube show, India’s Got Latent, landed in controversy after clips from its latest episode were widely circulated on social media. A particular joke by one of the panelists, Ranveer Allahbadia, became a point of contention. Now, multiple FIRs have been filed against the panelists and Samay, in a bid to co-operate with the authorities, has deleted all the episodes of the show from YouTube. Shortly before the controversy, comedian Rajiv Thakur, who is one of the cast members of The Great Indian Kapil Show, called Samay the “face of Indian comedy.”
In a chat with Siddharth Kannan on his YouTube channel, Rajiv said that despite working in comedy shows for so many years, he has started doing open mic nights, and he credited Samay Raina for introducing this change in his life. Rajiv said that he met Samay on Kapil’s show. “He said I have learnt comedy from watching all you guys. He asked me ‘Bhai, why don’t you do stand up?'” When Rajiv said that he does perform acts during corporate shows, Samay encouraged him to try new material at open mics, so he can start doing stand up sets. “He said you should do this, you are very good,” he recalled.
Rajiv shared that Samay even arranged for a show with the two of them, where Samay and Rajiv both performed for 30 minutes each. “He said this show is for you, you are the star of this show. So he really gave me a lot of respect. He gave me a lot of love,” he recalled fondly. Rajiv went on to say that Samay “is the face of Indian comedy today.”
He also shared that Samay might come across like he a blunt man, but he is actually quite respectful. “The kind of respect he gives you… People think he says whatever he feels like, but he actually gives you a lot of respect,” he said and added that Samay personally shot his vlog, got it edited and created a YouTube channel for Rajiv. “He shot my vlog, got it edited from his team, started my YouTube channel. He sat with and said, ‘Sir, I am putting this on your YouTube channel’, and he supported me.” Rajiv said that it was after Samay’s encouragement and support that he started doing open mics, and now he goes to perform every Saturday.
Rajiv also spoke about India’s Got Latent and said that if goes on that show as a panelist, they know what they are in for. “If I am prone to getting offended, then I shouldn’t go there, as simple as that,” he said.
