Salman Khan was offered Aishwarya Rai’s brother’s role in Josh; Shah Rukh Khan left after hearing Aamir Khan wants to play lead: producer

Shah Rukh Khan actually walked out of the film when he learnt that Aamir Khan wanted to play his part. The film was then offered to Salman Khan.

Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan started their careers in the same era and despite the two being huge stars since the early 1990s, they were never cast in the same film. In a new interview, producer Ratan Jain recently revealed that the two stars were supposed to star together in Mansoor Khan’s Josh. The film eventually starred SRK and Chandrachur Singh in the two roles that were once offered to SRK and Aamir. The film also starred Aishwarya Rai, and at one point, even Salman Khan was offered the part that would have him as Aishwarya’s on-screen brother Max.

In a chat with TV9 Bharatvarsh, Ratan Jain revealed that he wanted to cast Shah RUkh as Max, but Mansoor was interested in casting Aamir in that role. “We had decided that Aamir would do the role that was done by Chandrachur and Shah Rukh would do Max. Mansoor had shared with me that Aamir wants to play Max. I said, ‘Absolutely not, only Shah Rukh will do that, or I won’t do the film,” he said. Aamir and director Mansoor are cousins, and Aamir made his debut in his film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak.

Ratan recalled that since SRK had heard through the grapevine that Aamir had his eyes on the same role, he called for a joint narration. On the day of the narration, the director and producer, along with Shah Rukh and Aamir landed at the same place but just before the narration could begin, Mansoor revealed Aamir’s intentions. “Before the narration, Mansoor said Aamir wants to play Max. Shah Rukh put on his shoes and left. He said, ‘I am not doing the film then’,” he recalled.

Since Shah Rukh was now out of the picture, Mansoor pushed for Aamir’s casting but Ratan was certain that the role had to be done by Shah Rukh. Now that both Aamir and Shah Rukh were out of the picture, the film was shelved. Later, it was offered to Salman Khan, and he was quite interested in taking it up. “Salman agreed. We approached Akshaye Khanna, Saif Ali Khan, Chandrachur Singh but the director wanted Chandrachur,” he said.

Ratan recalled that it was around this time that Salman was offered Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, and while he had agreed to do Josh, Ratan Jain felt that he was more inclined towards taking up Bhansali’s project. “I went back to Shah Rukh. I told him this has happened and Salman doesn’t sound like he wants to do it,” he said. After hearing his producer, Shah Rukh asked him if he could have some time to think about it. “I told Shah Rukh, ‘Ab karni padegi, meri izzat ka swal hai (Now you will have to do it, it’s about my honour now).’ The next day he called me and said, ‘I am doing it’,” he said.

When asked how Aishwarya got cast, Ratan shared that she was already a part of the film when they were finalising Max. After playing on-screen siblings in Josh, Shah Rukh and Aishwarya played love interests in Mohabbatein. Aishwarya was also a part of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and it was there that her rumoured relationship with Salman began, which eventually came to an end a few years later.
