The Great Indian Kapil Show has landed in legal trouble after a joke on Rabindranath Tagore’s poetry in the previous episode reportedly offended the Bengali community. Post the episode’s streaming, the Bongo Bhashi Mahasabha Foundation issued a legal notice to Kapil Sharma. Certain reports also claimed that Salman Khan too has received a notice for his association with the show. However, the actor’s team denied all such claims and established that Salman Khan is not associated with the comedy show.
According to Times of India, the actor’s representative said, “Certain sections of the media are reporting that Salman Khan/SKTV has also received the notice, which is incorrect as we are not associated with The Great Indian Kapil Show on Netflix.”
In an episode featuring Do Patti stars Kajol and Kriti Sanon, Krushna Abhishek who impersonated as Jackie Shroff performed a skit and altered Rabindranath Tagore’s iconic song Ekla Cholo Re. Krushna, in a satirical twist, replaced the word “Ekla” with “Pachla”, implying “walk with five people.” He further joked that walking alone attracts dogs. Although this made his audience laugh in the episode, it didn’t sit well with the Bengali community.
Bengali poet Srijato Bandyopadhyay took to Facebook to condemn the skit. He wrote, “There is a subtle boundary between humour and mockery, and crossing it can be risky. Often, people disregard whom they are joking about, what they are saying, and how far they go–all in a quest to chase high ratings and make people laugh. They forget where to draw the line.”
This was also condemned by music director Indradip Dasgupta, vocalist Iman Chakraborty, and filmmaker Suman Mukhopadhyay.
The Bongo Bhashi Mahasabha Foundation in its legal notice claimed that the show has crossed cultural and religious boundaries by making a joke of Rabindranath Tagore’s Ekla Cholo Re, a song widely revered in Bengali households. The makers of the show and Kapil Sharma are yet to react to the same.
Salman Khan was associated with the Kapil Sharma’s show in its initial phase, when the show was aired on television. Salman Khan Television had co-produced the season two and three along with Banijay Asia with K9 Productions and Triyambh Entertainment and Media) as the creative producers for Sony Entertainment Television.
