Anupam Kher arrived at Cannes 2025 for the premiere of his directorial debut, Tanvi The Great and had an unexpected reunion with his co-star turned best friend, Robert De Niro. The legendary Hollywood star was honoured with the Palme d’Or for Lifetime Achievement at the 78th annual film festival. Kher later took to his social media to share a video, where the Casino star was seen warmly embracing him and even planting a sweet kiss on his cheek. The actor then wrote a long note, praising their friendship and calling it one of the “biggest blessings” of his life.
“It was the most amazing feeling to meet my friend Robert De Niro, his graceful wife #Tiffany, and their beautiful daughter Jia in Cannes! Their love and affection touched me deeply,” Kher said. The actors worked together on the 2012 film Silver Linings Playbook, which received an Oscar nomination.The film also featured Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence in key roles. In the video, the veteran Indian star can be heard expressing his excitement upon meeting De Niro and adding that while they don’t meet often, some relationships are like a pause button on a tape recorder, you just hit pause and pick up right where you left off.

The 81-year-old then reciprocated his feelings by kissing him on the cheek and smiling from ear to ear. “I told him about the world premiere of Tanvi The Great in Cannes! He warmly met Shubhangi (Tanvi) and the rest of our crew,” Kher wrote, adding that he also showed De Niro the first poster, which he loved. “Thank you, dearest Mr. De Niro, for your love, warmth, that wonderful hug, the delicious lunch, and your infectious brilliance over the years!” Kher’s Tanvi The Great will debut on May 17 in the Marche du Film segment of Cannes. The film features Boman Irani, Jackie Shroff, Arvind Swami, Karan Tacker, and Game of Thrones star Iain Glen.
Boman Irani, who made his Cannes debut, said, (via NDTV) “To be at Cannes, representing Indian cinema on such a prestigious global platform with a film as heartfelt as Tanvi: The Great, is an honour beyond words.” Describing his role as Raza Saab, he called it the most fulfilling part of his career yet. “Collaborating with Anupam Kher, an artist I have immense respect and admiration for, made the experience even more special. I hope this film resonates with audiences worldwide, just as it moved me while portraying this deeply nuanced character,” he added.
