‘Rishi Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor used to fight a lot’: Subhash Ghai says Ranbir has matured after marriage to Alia Bhatt, respects elders

Subhash Ghai recalled that Rishi Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor used to fight often, and Ranbir would complain to Neetu Singh about his father, asking her to let him make his own decisions freely.

Ranbir Kapoor was last seen in the film AnimalSubhash Ghai said that if Rishi Kapoor were alive, he would have been proud of Ranbir Kapoor.

Ranbir Kapoor is counted among the most gifted actors of his generation. The actor has made diverse choices to showcase his range, depth, and commitment to the craft, especially in the last decade. However, one of his most vocal critics was his own father, the late legendary actor Rishi Kapoor, who often expressed concerns about Ranbir’s inclination towards offbeat cinema and his reluctance to fully immerse himself in commercial Bollywood. Now, veteran filmmaker Subhash Ghai, who shared a close relationship with Rishi Kapoor and closely witnessed the father-son dynamic, has opened up about their bond in an interview with CNN-News18:

Rishi Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor are two different personalities. The way a younger generation wants to live is something which is always disliked by the father, and what father wants is something the son opposes. So these two used to fight a lot. Just like a regular father-son dynamic. So there was ample love as well. Rishi always used to feel that Ranbir is leaning towards western cinema, and he always felt that if he needs to be successful, he has to embrace Hindi cinema fully,” Ghai shared.

Delving deeper into their relationship, he added, “Ranbir had just come back from New York, having learnt filmmaking, so Rishi used to tell me a lot about their equation. He often used to scold Ranbir and then Ranbir would never say anything to Rishi but later complain to Neetu about letting him take his decisions freely. So they were two different personalities altogether.”

Subhas Ghai also reflected on Ranbir’s current stature in the industry, a front-runner among today’s stars, and lamented the fact that Rishi is no longer around to witness it. “When Ranbir does a role, he gets full into it. He has done a lot of experiments as well, some good, some bad, but he has now proven himself to be a number one star, and also number one actor. These days anybody who gives four hits in a row is labelled a star by the media, but he is a fantastic actor. And sometimes I think, remembering Rishi, if he was alive, I would have told him, ‘See where your son has reached.’ I used to tell him, don’t pester him, let him do what he wants. But every father is concerned about their son, and wants him to do better than himself.”

Speaking further about Ranbir, Subhas Ghai remarked, “He is somebody who understands life, and things. And he has become more mature after marriage. Still respects the elders, always touches feet whenever we meet, so he has those values intact. In fact, those who have come just now have more tantrums than Ranbir. He is still very humble and too simple a guy.” Addressing the ongoing nepotism debate in the same conversation, Subhas Ghai also shared his view that ultimately, it’s talent and hard work that determine success. He noted that several individuals from film families have failed to make a mark because “they didn’t have it in them.”

Ranbir Kapoor was last seen in Animal and is currently shooting for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love and War. He is also gearing up for the release of Ramayan Part 1 next year, with filming for Part 2 expected to begin soon. Rumours are also rife that he may lead the next installment of the Dhoom franchise.
