Actor Akshay Kumar has lauded Indian government’s announcement to award Indian medal winners at Rio Olympics 2016 with cash prizes. The government will be awarding Rs 50 lakh, 30 lakh and 20 lakh as prize money to gold, silver and bronze medal winners respectively. Welcoming the decision, Akshay said, “I was watching the news early in the morning and it was great seeing all countries participating in Olympics. I think the best thing to have happened is the government announcing cash prizes for those who win medals for our country.”
The Rustom actor feels money will motivate players to play to win.”It is important to give money along with medals as our players will feel motivated to win. We often read a lot about Olympians selling gol gappe and other items owing to poverty. They sell off their own medals so that they can have money to live. I have read people who work for Indian Railways are also there and they have also announced cash prizes. So to learn that government will be giving money to the medal winners is a very good thing. So our players will also feel motivated that if they work hard and win, they will get money along with medals and their future will be secure.”

Akshay believes this move will also inspire budding athletes to perform better.”Other athletes on seeing that cash prizes are being awarded by our government by way of recognising merit, will also work hard. This will eventually help us win a lot of medals,” averred Akshay.
