Richa Chadha, who is attending the Cannes Film Festival with her husband, actor Ali Fazal, recently weighed in on the ongoing social media debate about whether fashion overshadows films at the prestigious fest. Most Indian actors walking the red carpet at Cannes have been representing international brands and fashion labels. This includes Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who is the face of L’Oréal. She attended the screening of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny at the ongoing festival last week.
The debate gained momentum after actor and filmmaker Nandita Das took to her social media platforms recently and wrote, “It’s a festival of films, not clothes.” The Kashmir Files filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri had also expressed sorrow over the reduction of the Cannes Film Festival to a fashion event. Now, actor Richa Chadha has shared her views on the debate.
Taking to Instagram stories, Richa wrote, “There’s a lot of chatter on social media about Cannes, fashion, film etc. Just wanna say, don’t sh*t on anyone please. People are excited to be here, I notice the ones that are thanking brands/designers/alcohol labels that are bringing their influencers here. It’s also a great venue for marketing no? Let them be/ You will notice most people say they’re at the red carpet but won’t specify the film. Well, cuz they’re not here with a film or for a film.”
Richa then also shared how her film received accolades from the audience and a seven-minute-long standing ovation. She added, “Having said that, should you be so lucky to get to work on a film that ends up at @festovaldecannes…it’s the BEST feeling in the world. It is after all a FILM FESTIVAL, no matter what anyone says. And as an artist, there’s no greater joy and contentment than a 7 min long standing ovation at the Grand Palais, That’s me after shedding buckets… It was overwhelming 🥹.”
Richa had earlier attended the Cannes Film Festival for Neeraj Ghaywan’s directorial Masaan, and Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur. This year she is there with Ali for her production venture Girls Will Be Girls. Richa will next be starring in an international film Aaina with William Moseley. Indian films officially selected for this year’s Cannes are Kennedy and Agra.
