While the entire Deol family, including Dharmendra, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol are great actors, the trio lacks in the art form of dancing. The so-called ‘non-dancers’ have always publicly acknowledged being less comfortable in dancing in their films, as compared to other actors. Now, in a recent interview, Bollywood’s ace choreographer Chinni Prakash, who has worked in several films with both Sunny and Bobby, opened up about their dancing skills.
When asked to recall his experience of working with Sunny in Jeet’s Yaara O Yaara, he laughed and replied, “My God! I don’t even want to think about that day in flashback. Makes me scared to even think about it. Uff! It’s an ant stamp moment. Dance aur Sunny sahab bahut door door hain.”
He continued, “Other choreographers got talented dancers to teach dance to. For example, Saroj ji got Madhuri Dixit and Sridevi. What did I get? Action master Akshay Kumar? Secondly, bodybuilder Suniel Shetty? He didn’t know any steps. Third, Sunny sahab! It is my destiny. Nobody had the guts to take these people and do, they were all rejected people by other choreographers. But, I came forward and got out the best from them.”
Having said that, Chinni’s approach towards choreography is that one gets more credit by teaching the art to a fellow non-dancer. “I feel that I need to prove my point. I need to show everyone who Chinni Prakash is. I just have to make the song hit, it’s a do or die situation. Be it fight master, body builder or a non-dancer. If you make dancers dance, you can’t earn fame. If you teach it to someone who doesn’t know how to dance at all, then that’s something.”
Praising Sunny’s brother Bobby Deol’s style and charm, Chinni expressed, “When I saw Bobby coming inside with his glasses and long hair, I saw his walking and you really like his walking. He has his own walking style like Sanjay Dutt. He has a groove in his walk. That’s what I caught and thought that his walk is his plus point. And, my step will look different on him. We shot that song for seven days with all the disco light and dancers. He was like an Italian star.”
He further added, “For the first time, I thought that somebody in the Deol house came up with the dancing rhythm, light weightless style. Dharam paaji ki family se ek aadmi dance karaha hai, aur kya chahiye humko (someone from Dharmendra’s family is dancing, what more do I want)?”
The choreographer revealed that Bobby Deol practiced for their song Duniya Haseeno Ka Mela from Gupt (1997) shoot for more than a month. “My assistant Sudhakar did one month of rehearsal with him. It was his duty to wake up at and go to Bobby’s house at 7am. Meet Dharam paaji, take blessings, meet Sunny paaji, play tennis with him and then rehearsal with Bobby. This was his pattern for more than one month. We kept an assistant for him for one month, then we did the shoot,” he said.
