Bollywood stars’ vanity vans and the additional expenses they entail have become a sore point for film producers. In the recent past, there have been reports suggesting that some stars even call for six vanity vans on a set, and another star had a special van for her 2-year-old daughter. In the midst of this, a report by The Hollywood Reporter India claims that Ranveer Singh has three vanity vans when he shoots – one that he uses personally, another for his gym, and a third one for his private chef.
“Ranveer Singh requires three vanity vans when he’s on a shoot schedule. One for his personal use, one is a gym van, one is for his private chef,” a source close to the actor told the publication. The same report quotes Ketan Raval, a vanity van vendor, saying that vanity vans started as a functional thing, as actors would find it difficult to change and use the facilities when they would be shooting in remote corners, but now, these vans are more about their status. “It started as a functional thing, now it’s more about the optics of who has what in their van,” he said.
Ketan also claimed that Shah Rukh Khan’s vanity van is so luxurious and big that it doesn’t even fit in cramped spaces, if the star happens to shoot at a remote location. “Shah Rukh sir’s van is so big that sometimes, he can’t take it to those remote locations. I send my van whenever he has to shoot in tight spaces,” he said.
Ketan Raval further spoke about the special requests made by stars for their vans, which could also include a black toilet. Talking about John Abraham’s vanity van, Ketan said that the star has a floor-to-ceiling window in his van, but the interiors are done in black. “John wanted floor-to-ceiling window so he could look out and let natural light flood the space. But he also insisted on everything being black – the floor, the walls, the sink, even the toilet. Nothing that isn’t black. So the only light entering is framed by an entirely dark box,” he said.
Another designer, Prateek Malewar, who builds vans with partner Aprurva Deshmukh, shared that Kangana Ranaut has a van where the interiors are done with sheeshum wood. “She wanted solid sheesham wood interiors. It’s not only difficult to source but also extremely hard to maintain,” he said.
The report claims that the average maintenance cost of a van is around Rs 10-15 lakh. Talking about the cost of a van, a top-tier ‘super van’, which has multi-room set-ups with expanding living space, can cost around Rs 2-3 crore. A high end custom van, with Italian marble, luxury recliners and gym equipment costs around Rs 75 lakh-1 crore. A mid-range van with sofas, small pantry, a modest washroom and a television can cost around Rs 35-50 lakh. And a basic van, with just a dressing space and an air conditioner costs around Rs 15-20 lakh.
