YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, also known as BeerBiceps, has over 10 million subscribers on YouTube and runs a major talent management company and media house. He was recently embroiled in a controversy that saw his income come to a standstill when he was barred from publishing new content online. He eventually received a green light from the Supreme Court to publish new videos, but it had been two months by then. In an interview, Ranveer said that none of his employees quit during the difficult phase, which began after he made controversial remarks on comedian Samay Raina’s India’s Got Latent comedy show. But the difficult period, he said, made him reflect about the financial hardships his parents experienced some years ago.

In a chat with Prafful Garg, Ranveer was asked about his seemingly wealthy background, and he said that his business was entirely ‘bootstrapped’, and that his parents provided only emotional support to him. Asked about the privileged background he comes from, and how he can claim to have experienced difficulties, Ranveer said, “I don’t think I’ve shared this story before; I’m not sure. But this is a true story.”

He continued, “Doctors start earning only after the age of 40. Both my parents are doctors, and we have seen that sudden rise. Things were going very well. During that phase, I was in the Dhirubhai Ambani International School. There are a lot of kids who come from middle-class families in that school. Their parents put everything they have into giving them a good education. Contrary to popular belief, the school doesn’t just have rich kids. At the same time, the richest kids in Mumbai certainly go to that school; they come from families with Rs 40,000 crore net worth. It can be an inspirational environment, but, at the same time, it can also be a challenging environment if you’re from a middle-class or even upper middle-class family.”

Ranveer said that when he was in class 10, his parents were hit with a financial setback. “I did my 11th and 12th standard from a local college, and at the same time, my family faced a huge problem. We lost all our businesses, a lot happened. I haven’t spoken about what happened during that six-year period. But they bounced back. When I was 22, my parents genuinely didn’t have the money to fund my foreign education, or to fund my business. Right after college, I worked at an engineering factory, and then I started working as a fitness trainer. In fact, I funded my diet from the training I provided… My business is completely bootstrapped.”

After the India’s Got Latent controversy, Ranveer issued an immediate apology. But the damage had been done; several FIRs were filed against him and others involved in the show, and he has since been questioned by the police about the matter. He recently resumed posting content on his channel, and teased a new future for it. Ranveer said that during this time, he was very worried about his mother’s safety, because protesters had started showing up to her clinic. The controversy began when Ranveer posed a seemingly scandalous question to a contestant on the show, which has since been paused by Samay Raina.
