Rani Mukerji recalls when Aamir Khan thought her voice was ‘not suited’ for the film Ghulam, insisted on dubbing over it: ‘I was very sad…’

Rani recalled how Aamir approached her and said, “He started the conversation and said ‘we should do what is best for the film and we know that actresses like Sridevi ji’s voice has been dubbed for so many years and they are popular.” The actor recalled how at the age of 18, she did not understand what was happening.

Aamir told her, “We all collectively feel that your voice is not suited for Alisha’s part.” Rani continued, “But because I was a newcomer, I could not say anything. I was actually very sad at that time because I felt the voice of a person is her true identity. Till today, I do feel sometimes a bit not connected to Ghulam completely because it is not my voice.”

Later, Vikram told Rani that the editors felt her voice sounded different while they were editing, which is why there was pressure to dub her voice. She added, “Since it was a newcomer against Aamir, they did not want to take that risk, they said let’s go safe.”

Rani mentioned that Ghulam and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai were being filmed at the same time and also shared the reasons she’s thankful to Karan Johar. She said, “Cut to Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. I would like to thank Karan, when Karan met me, he obviously knew that my voice is get dubbed in Ghulam. At that time he also asked me ‘Rani are you uncomfortable with dubbing.’ I said ‘No, not at all.’ He said, ‘I quite like your voice, in my movie you will be dubbing your voice.”

Rani said in an earlier interview with mid-day that Aamir later apologised to her, “I remember Aamir calling me after watching KKHH, saying, ‘Babes I think we made a huge mistake by dubbing your voice. And your voice is really good.’”
