Ranbir Kapoor is all set to reunite with filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali after a gap of 17 years for Love and War, and the actor’s excitement is palpable. “I am extremely excited. He is my godfather. Everything I know about films, everything I know about acting, it is something I learnt from him,” Ranbir said at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa on Sunday.
Working with Bhansali again has been a nostalgic experience for Ranbir, who revealed that the filmmaker remains unchanged despite the passage of time. Ranbir made his acting debut with SLB’s 2007 film Saawariya. Expressing his deep reverence for the acclaimed director, Ranbir said, “He hasn’t changed at all. He is extremely hard-working. All he thinks about is his movies. He just wants to speak about the character, he wants you to create, do something different.”
Ranbir Kapoor has earlier spoken publicly about his challenging experience working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, revealing that the director would often yell and scold him on set. Despite this, Ranbir has expressed his admiration for Bhansali’s craft and dedication to his work, and has credited the director with teaching him valuable lessons about filmmaking and acting.
The actor’s reunion with Bhansali coincides with a significant milestone – the 100th birth anniversary of his grandfather, the legendary filmmaker-actor Raj Kapoor. To commemorate the milestone, Ranbir, along with the NFDC, NFAI, his uncle Kunal Kapoor, and the Film Heritage Foundation, has undertaken a massive project to restore Raj Kapoor’s films.
“We have done 10 films so far and we have much more to do,” Ranbir said, adding that a film festival will be held from December 13 to 15 to showcase his grandfather’s iconic movies across India. “I am really hopeful you guys will check out his work because there are so many people who haven’t seen his work,” Ranbir said, emphasising the importance of introducing generations to Raj Kapoor’s cinematic legacy.
Ranbir also highlighted the significance of remembering India’s cinematic roots and celebrating the contributions of pioneers like Raj Kapoor. “I remember the first time I met Alia (Bhatt), she asked me, ‘Who is Kishore Kumar?’ It’s just the circle of life. People are forgotten and then newer artiste come. So, I think it’s very important that we remember our roots. Not just Mr. Raj Kapoor, there are so many filmmakers and artistes that we should constantly celebrate,” Ranbir said.
Love and War, also starring Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal, is scheduled to be released in cinemas in March 2026.
