It has now been over a fortnight since Sudipto Sen’s controversial film The Kerala Story hit the screens. The controversial film continues to generate divisive discussions among the public and on social media. While some claim that the movie provides an authentic representation of events unfolding in Kerala, others argue that its creators are disseminating falsehoods as part of a propaganda effort against the state.
In the midst of all this, renowned filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has come out in support of The Kerala Story while criticising Bollywood for its “death-like silence on the shattering success of the film.”
RGV also said the film will haunt Bollywood like a “mysterious fog in every story discussion room and corporate house.”
“We are so comfortable in telling lies to both others and ourselves that when someone goes ahead and shows the truth we get SHOCKED… That explains the DEATH like SILENCE of BOLLYWOOD on the SHATTERING SUCCESS of #KeralaStory,” the filmmaker said in the first tweet of a series.
“The #KeralaStory is like a BEAUTIFUL GHOSTLY MIRROR showing the DEAD face of Main stream BOLLYWOOD to itself in all its UGLINESS.”
“The #KeralaStory will haunt like a mysterious fog in every story discussion room and every corporate house in BOLLYWOOD forever,” he pointed out, adding: “It’s difficult to learn from #KeralaStory because it’s EASY to copy a LIE but very DIFFICULT to copy TRUTH.”
The controversy erupted after the makers of the film dropped its trailer claiming that the flick was based on the stories of more than 32,000 Kerala women who had allegedly been radicalised by Islamic fundamentalists. Meanwhile, amid backlash for its factual inaccuracies, they altered the trailer and the revised version of the trailer description on YouTube said that the film was based on the “true stories of three young girls from different parts of Kerala.”
Following this, the makers on Thursday informed the Supreme Court that they would include a disclaimer stating that “there is no authentic data to back up the suggestion that the figure of conversion is 32,000 or any other established figure” and that “the film represents a fictionalised account of the events which form the subject matter of the film”.
According to industry tracker Sacnilk, The Kerala Story has so far earned Rs 187.47 crore. Though its collection has been dropping since Tuesday, Sacnilk has predicted that it might eke out good money on Sunday.
Nonetheless, Sudipto Sen’s controversial film has already emerged as the second biggest hit of the year, surpassing the lifetime collections of Ranbir Kapoor-Shraddha Kapoor starrer Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar in less than two weeks.
