Grittiness. Raw violence. Blood-soaked characters. These were the hallmarks of many Ram Gopal Varma films, which have since become the yardstick for violent action dramas. One of the recent films that pushed the envelope of onscreen violence was Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal, and the worlds of these two filmmakers met recently in an event, titled Animal vs Wild Animal.

“It was more impactful than seeing armies fighting each other. In fact, I remember narrating Shiva to Nagarjuna when he was shooting for Agni Putrudu. I told him that the violence in Shiva would be more gritty than bombs being burst, and knives being slashed. For instance, the scene with Naresh coming from the theatre in the darkness, and when he is hit from behind, the cold-bloodedness of the hit is even more effective,” said RGV, adding, “I felt the same thing with Ranbir’s scenes in Animal, especially the low angle shot. It haunts me even now.”
Ram Gopal Varma added that the demeanour of Sandeep Reddy Vanga didn’t really reflect the violence he showcased on screen, especially since he is able to look composed even when exuding intensity. “I never see anger in you. Maybe you reserve it for your characters or you are acting like you don’t have that rage or you are just different from the characters you create,” said the Satya director.
Sandeep Reddy Vanga is currently working on the much-awaited Prabhas-starrer Spirit, which is expected to feature the pan-Indian superstar in the role of a police officer.
