Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has taken to X (formely known as Twitter) to share his review of Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal. In his review, RGV heaped praise on Ranbir’s performance and Sandeep’s direction. He even asked Sandeep to send a picture of his feet so that he ‘can touch them’.
Ram mentioned how Fatal Attraction and Lolita filmmaker Adrian Lyne once said that ‘films should make the audience violently argue what a film stands for’ and Sandeep achieved that with Animal. He wrote, “There will be massive fights over the content and the character of Ranbir in ANIMAL long after its box office run is over and I truly believe it can also trigger a cultural overhaul due to the way Sandeep has ripped off the clothes of moral hypocrisy with his bare naked honesty.”
He called Animal a social statement and wrote, “That is because ANIMAL is not merely a film .. it is a SOCIAL STATEMENT. One of my favourite moments is when against everyone’s expectations, including me in the audience was that he (Ranbir’s character Vijay) will come back with a base ball bat or something, but when he comes back with a machine gun that almost made us all fall off our chairs and that moment is a pure cinematic gem.”
The director also lauded two controversial scenes from Animal and call them comical. RGV wrote, “Some random comic scenes like the bra strap spanking, talking about sex with the doctors etc to name a few which seemingly have no context but what they really do is to subconsciously act as a sledgehammer to drive the protagonist’s character into the viewers’ heads.”
Ram Gopal Varma didn’t like the scene in the film when Ranbir Kapoor’s character Vijay asks Tripti Dimri’s character to lick his shoes. The director, however, later in his review claimed that he ‘wants to lick both Ranbir and Sandeep’s shoes’ as a gesture of appreciation. He wrote, “The only time I disliked Vijay’s character is when he asks the girl to lick his shoe and I think that’s because of the brilliant casting of that actress which evoked an instant empathy in me the moment I saw her and it only grew with every close up of hers.”

Despite the problematic nature of the scene, RGV praised Ranbir for his performance and compared him to Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio. “Except for that one single scene where he asks that girl to lick his shoe, I felt his performance was superior to even of Leonardo de caprio in wolf of wall street,” he wrote.
Further sharing his appreciation for Ranbir Kapoor’s performance, Ram Gopal Varma wrote, “Not from the 1st film of India, Raja Harishchandra in 1913 till now in 2023 in the last 110 years was there more consistency and intensity in an actor’s portrayal of a character than what Ranbir did in ANIMAL. More than him being physically naked in a particular scene, he was emotionally naked throughout the film in his performance which takes much more strength of mind than just being physically naked.”
