Priya Sachdev’s birthday wish for Sunjay Kapur amid Rs 30,000 cr estate battle includes Karisma Kapoor’s kids, daughter from 1st marriage: ‘My Sunjay…’

To celebrate Sunjay Kapur's first birthday since his unfortunate passing, wife Priya Sachdev posted a video tribute consisting of their videos and pictures from over the years. Priya and Karisma Kapoor's children are embroiled in legal battle over Sunjay's Rs 30,000 cr estate.

Amid a legal case over who will be the benefactor of late industrialist Sunjay Kapur’s Rs 30,000 crore empire that has pitched his mother and children Kiaan and Samaira on one side and third wife Priya Sachdev on the other, she shared a birthday wish for Sunjay on her Instagram handle. Sunjay passed away earlier this year in London; he would have been 54 today. His children from second wife, actor Karisma Kapoor, have challenged his will and claimed that it is forged, raising fingers at Priya.

The video posted by Priya is a compilation of the photos and videos she possesses of Sunjay from over the years, including the ones with his children from his marriage to Karisma. However, Karisma herself is missing from this tribute. The post also features Priya’s daughter from her first marriage. The caption is actually a collection of phrases from the Bhagwad Gita, and it reads, “Whatever action a great man performs, others follow. Whatever path he walks, the world pursues. He who lives with purpose and love never perishes, for the divine dwells in all who serve with devotion.”

The video opens with the words, “Remembering Sunjay. A life that continues to inspire.” Then, along with the picture of Sunjay with Priya and his children, a voice note by himself starts playing in the background, saying, “I am a father. I am a husband. I am a friend and a son. I am here to protect my family, and I am here to make sure I pass on the right values to my children, to my family and to continue to uphold a certain vision for growth, for honesty, trust, love and respect.”

Priya herself had something to say in the video, and after playing some videos from Sunjay’s previous birthday bashes, she started speaking. She said, “My Sunjay, you taught us how to visualise and dream big. To believe in ourselves and in continuous self-improvement. That was your mantra. To do our duties and dharma. Your vision will always be alive. You will always stay in motion. You are the best husband, father, friend and human being I know. Thank you for your eternal love.” The video ended with the words, “Because some lives continue to shine.”

Sunjay Kapur’s Death

Sunjay was playing a polo match in England. It was reported at the time that he swallowed a bee and collapsed. While attempts were made to revive him, he passed away, and it was later revealed that the cause of his death was actually a heart attack.

Before Priya, Sunjay married Karisma Kapoor in 2003 during a grand wedding ceremony, but the two parted ways in 2016. The former couple shared two children, daughter Samaira and son Kiaan. Sunjay then married actor and model Priya Sachdev in 2017, and the two had a son, Azarius.

Sunjay Kapur’s Rs 30,000 crore estate

Sunjay took over his father’s company, Sona Comstar, and turned it into a global competitor. After his death, his wealth is assumed to be around Rs 30000 crore. As per a will with Priya, his entire empire will go to Priya, and she can distribute it or not, under her own discretion. This obviously shocked Sunjay’s family, as his mother, sister and ex-wife Karisma Kapoor were surprised to know that he hadn’t left anything for Samaria and Kiaan.

The children have now taken the case to Delhi High Court to battle for their inheritance. Senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani is arguing the case on their behalf and is calling the whole will forged. 72% of Sona Comstar’s shares are owned by the public, while 22% are owned by Aureus Investments Private Limited (AIPL), its corporate promoter.

Jethmalani argued in court that, “Even as she (Priya) scrambled to take control of AIPL before the ashes could be immersed, she became an MD (managing director) a day after the funeral on June 24, and Nitin Sharma was rewarded (for attesting as a witness on the alleged forged will), made a director of AIPL on August 2… The conspiracy the three (Priya, Dinesh Agarwal, another witness, an aide of Priya, and Nitin) were making by preparing, propounding and editing the will is a digital footprint of the criminal conspiracy… it is the most serious offence… This is a widespread conspiracy, and there’s certainly enough material there to have a criminal complaint.”

Jethmalani also claimed in the court that Priya controls 60% of the estate directly, 12% through her son, and 75% of the Kapur family trust. “This isn’t inheritance. It’s a takeover – under the guise of widowhood,” he argued.

Sunjay’s family’s reaction

Several stories had been making the news since the will was read out to the family. Sunjay’s mother, Rani, wrote a letter to the board of the company stating that she was coerced into signing documents without any explanation. She wrote, “I was approached multiple times and compelled to sign various documents without explanation or even having time to read and understand the same. Despite being under immense mental and emotional distress, I was coerced into signing such documents behind locked doors… the contents of such documents have never been revealed to me.”

Sunjay’s sister Mandhira also weighed in on the whole matter. “They (Samaira and Kiaan) have 100% rights over Sunjay’s estate. My father told us three siblings very clearly that the six grandkids are the centre of his life. He even went on to say that whether our marriages last or not, that should not affect the six grandkids,” said Mandhira Kapur in an interview with Vickey Lalwani.
